The New York Football Giants made an interesting move on Tuesday, signing a veteran quarterback. Russell Wilson will join his fourth NFL team, the third in three seasons. Wilson has signed a one-year deal worth up to 21 million dollars with 10.5 million guaranteed. According to Adam Schefter, the former Super Bowl-winning quarterback narrowed his decision between returning to the Pittsburgh Steelers, going to the Cleveland Browns, or settling for the New York Giants. What does this mean for the Giants? How will this impact the team’s future?
What Does This Mean for NYG?
Russell Wilson will enter his 14th season as QB1 for the New York Giants. The Giants parted ways with former starter Daniel Jones by releasing the quarterback in the middle of the 2024 season. Many believe the G-Men would take a quarterback in April’s upcoming NFL Draft. New York has eight picks in the 2025 draft, including the third overall. Many analysts and fans believe the team would select one of the top two quarterbacks available this year. Cam Ward and Shadeur Sanders have been talked about as the two front runners to be selected as the first two quarterbacks off the board.
What does it mean for the third pick in the draft? It means that New York has options. That’s right, they have unlimited options. Do you want to select your future quarterback at number 3? Go ahead! Pick who is available between Sanders and Ward. Or maybe Jaxson Dart shot up your big board. Have the young quarterback sit behind the veteran for a year and learn the pro game. Are you not in love with a quarterback this year? Then select the best player available player in a position of need. Or they could even trade down to a team that is eyeing one of those top-2 field generals.
Final Thoughts
This is a great signing for the New York Giants. People forget that Russ is a Super Bowl-winning quarterback. Obviously, the Denver experiment failed, but Wilson had a solid season under great coaching in Pittsburgh. He went 6-5 and had decent numbers, throwing 16 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions. The combination of him and young, phenomenal receiver Malik Nabers could be dangerous. The NFC East is one of the toughest in football, so I wouldn’t expect the Giants to be playoff contenders. This also gives the team options to draft a QB and let them sit or wait for next year if they aren’t in love with one this year. The recent signing of Jameis Winston will possibly give some interesting trade requests. Teams are always looking for quarterbacks, and there are always injuries. The Giants set themselves up for a deadline deal.
