NC Wildfire, fire, safety public notice

March 25, 2025

There is currently an active burn ban across the state of North Carolina. Around 8a.m. on March 21, 2025, the North Carolina Forest Service issued this ban, which permits all of the state’s 100 counties to burn any fires. This ban remains in effect and will remain so until further notice. This Spring season, NC is seeing a higher increase in dry conditions, which officials feel makes this ban necessary.

Where Are The Fires?

You can view up-to-date information on a live map via the North Carolina Forest Service website. Originally, most of the fires were in western North Carolina, but have now spread throughout the state as a whole. This map can tell you not only the location, but the containment and size as well. Polk County currently has a 2,813 AC wildfire that is at 0% containment.

This is an example of why this burn ban is absolutely necessary with the current weather conditions. The fires have grown to such a substantial size that the North Carolina Department of Public Safety announced a mandatory evacuation for parts of Polk County. This fire is now expanding into the Blue Ridge Mountains. Fires are now burning in the mid to eastern parts of North Carolina, as well as in some southeastern areas.

Controlling and Preventing

Currently, firefighters are facing challenges in controlling the blazing flames. This is due to strong winds, low humidity, and debris from previous storms and seasons. These factors plus other current levels of dry Spring weather are continuing to make containment harder.

Local fire departments across the state, as well as law enforcement, are actively assisting the North Carolina Forest Service in enforcing the burn ban. It is essential that compliance with this ban is achieved, thus helping to ensure public safety and preventing any further fires. The statewide ban is a preventive measure that helps address this critical situation.

For Now…

The public is urged to pay attention to the air quality alert, and any changes in weather and safety alerts in your area. Please note that this statewide ban remains in effect and will continue until further notice. Officials are even posting on social media, trying to reach as many people as possible to educate them of the current state of the fires and safety measures.
