In a rare moment of candor and honesty in Donald Trump’s New World Order, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski has come clean regarding the worst kept secret in Washington D.C., nay, the entire United States. Speaking at a conference in in Anchorage on Monday, Ms, Murkowski bravely made an admission about being a public servant during these troubled times.
These were words that will no doubt bring the wrath of the Trump Administration and MAGA Nation right to her doorstep. And the independent thinking moderate runs the risk of being further ostracized within her own party. Indeed, some on the Right immediately criticized her remarks.
Fear of Trump
In comments first reported by the Anchorage Daily News, Ms. Murkowski spoke of the fear of Trump who is governing without any guardrails and the retribution that follows. In her remarks she said.
“We are all afraid. It’s quite a statement. But we are in a time and a place where I certainly have not been here before. I’ll tell you, I’m oftentimes very anxious myself about using my voice, because retaliation is real. And that’s not right.”
Ms. Murkowski has long been a lone voice in the GOP world, especially since the abdication of any independent thought in the Republican Party that differs even slightly from Trump. She has opposed the Trump Administration proposals on Greenland, Ukraine, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and the confirmation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Past Opposition
She also broke ranks with her party when in 2022, she was one of three Republicans who voted to confirm President Joe Biden’s choice for the Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson. But she most angered the president and his supporters when she was among seven Republicans lawmakers (and the only one up for re-election) who voted in 2021 to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial.
She won her re-election race by a close margin over a Trump-backed opponent. And she again drew the president’s ire further when in 2024 she endorsed former Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina in the GOP presidential race. She had even contemplated leaving the party but decided against it. At that moment she told CNN.
“I just regret that our party is seemingly becoming a party of Donald Trump. I am navigating my way through some very interesting political times. Let’s just leave it at that.”
Criticism of Ms. Murkowski’s Comments
As coverage of the senator’s comments made their way around the nation’s capital, a larger conversation regarding her remarks have divided the beltway. While some have been sympathetic to her plight: it being rare for a congressional Republican to make comments like this in public. The president’s supporters have been boisterous in their opposition to her admission.
Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee rebuffed Murkowski’s writing on X.
“I don’t know a single Republican senator who feels that way. Not even one.”
And Lee’s words elicited a response from Elon Musk who endorsed the senator’s comments by posting two American flag emojis beneath his tweet. The White House was mostly muted in its response instead pivoting to their standard line of the president’s policies are great for American and he maintains huge support for his actions.
Murkowski Stands Firm
Ms. Murkowski for her part stands by her comments. She indicated that she has no intention of muting herself despite her fears.
“That’s what you’ve asked me to do,” she said, referring to her constituents. “I’m going to use my voice to the best of my ability. I have to figure out how I can do my best to help the many who are so anxious and are so afraid.”
