In the middle of the wild and unpredictable NHL Playoffs, big news came out of Utah. Yes, you heard that right big news out of Utah! This isn’t 1997 with Stockton and Malone, it’s 2025 and we’re talking puck, not the hardwood. The Utah Hockey Club has announced its new nickname going forward. Ladies and gentlemen, I now pronounce the former Hockey Club as the newly introduced Mammoth! Over 850,000 fans voted between the Outlaws, Mammoth, and Hockey Club. The Yeti was also an option that was dropped due to trademark issues. How do the people feel about the name change?
The History of the Utah Mammoth Franchise
The luck may have changed for the Utah Mammoth franchise in the past few days. After moving up ten spots to number four in the NHL Draft Lottery, the Utah Hockey Club then announced the nickname change to the Mammoth. The newly named Mammoth team will try to leave the past in the past and will look to bright futures. The combination of young talent with veteran leadership should keep the fans intrigued with their “Tusks Up” without needing the help of certain performance enhancers.
It has been a long journey for the Utah Mammoth to emerge from the Ice Age. The franchise was originally located north of the border in our 51st state of Canada. Of course, I am kidding. The original Winnipeg Jets played in Manitoba, from 1972 to 1996. Unfortunately, the team was never able to raise Lord Stanley but they did capture three Avco World Trophies.
The team then moved to Phoenix, Arizona rebranding as the Coyotes. The Coyotes had little to no success in the desert. Since 1999 the Yotes made the playoffs nine times and often not getting out of the first round. This season was the first resided in Salt Lake City, where the Hockey Club failed to make the playoffs.
Final Thoughts
Finally, a team with a name change got it right! The fans got to vote and I believe they made the right decision. Utah is now being called the Mammoth, with a great team logo, and already has one of the best-looking sweaters in the league! Recent name changes like the Washington Commanders and Cleveland Guardians, in my opinion, have been brutal. It seems like the fans got this one right. The name is not corny, it fits the area and again the color scheme, logo, and jerseys are sharp! With the number 4 pick in the draft and the peaked fan interest, the Utah Mammoth may have a bright future in the NHL.
