spring breakers 2

If you love movies with drug dealers, fast cars, girls in bikinis, and beach party vibes, the original Spring Breakers would be right up your alley! The $5 million-budgeted film went on to gross $30 million at the box office, on it’s way to becoming one of more successful recent cult classics. The long-awaited sequel is scheduled to begin production soon.

The sequel will be subtitled “Salvation Mountain” and will feature an entirely new cast and director. So hopefully you and your people can put your Nike shorts in every color on, spray on your Calvin Klein cologne, and sing some Britney Spears on your way to the theatre to see this exciting sequel!

Spring Breakers Recap

Filmmaker Harmony Korine is no stranger to creating some of the most iconic cult classics in movie history. His writing of the 1995 film, Kids, provided a dark inside look at the life of a group of teens in NYC that may be a little too realistic for some to handle. He followed that up with directing his next cult classic, 1997’s Gummo. In 2012, Korine did his magic again, striking yet again with another cult-following type movie with Spring Breakers.

The movie starred the talented James Franco, who brought his comedic and artistic style to the film, playing a rapper, drug dealer, and gangster named Alien. He becomes fond of a group of college girls that includes Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez. What could possibly go wrong when a complete drug-dealing stranger bails you out of jail on Spring Break? Probably not much, as long as he has money, a cool car, and some sticky icky, we should be just fine. The girls did get to enjoy singing Britney Spears and robbing people before their fun came crashing to a halt.

Spring Breakers 2’s New Cast

Spring Breakers 2: Salvation Mountain will have a whole new cast from the original movie, including its director. Matthew Bright will take over the reins of directing the sequel. Bright is most notably known for writing the 1996 movie Freeway. Although it is rumored to have cameos by Hudgens and Gomez, the cast will look a lot different. And do you blame the girls for not returning? Their characters had a horrific spring break experience, and I wouldn’t be surprised if their “spring break days” are over. As we all know (Spoiler Alert), James Franco will not be returning after Alien suffered a shot to the dome in the original.

As the tagline to the movie states, “Spring Break Forever,” it lives on with or without you. The sequel will feature Bella Thorne, Ariel Martin, Grace Van Dien, and True Whitaker. Thorne is best known for her roles in Shake It Off, The Duff, and Blended. Fans may recognize Van Dien from her parts in the popular series Stranger Things. The direction of the sequel is intriguing. With a new director, cast, and the way the first film ended, it should be interesting to see what kind of dark shenanigans can take place at Salvation Mountain.

Final Thoughts

The original Spring Breakers movie brought us one of the greatest characters ever in cinematic history! James Franco’s portrayal of Alien was gold! Was he doing his spin on the rapper Riff Raff? Yes, but it was hilarious. The outrageous behavior and one-liners made me a huge fan of the original movie.

The sequel has me excited, but with a new cast, director and obviously a completely new story, will Salvation Mountain live up to the original movie? Can part deux become the next great cult classic like the first? Even if it is awkward to watch a grown man performing fellatio on a barrel of a gun while a teen girl holds it, we can all agree that “Spring Break is forever!”
