mass shooting, crime tape, police, crime scene, do not cross, police tape

Philadelphia’s Memorial Day was marred by a mass shooting this year. Yesterday evening, the shooting happened at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. The weekend had been full of festivities, and at approximately 10:27 p.m., gunfire started. The Philadelphia Police Department said that the open gunfire was around where Lemon Hill Drive and Poplar Drive are located. There were multiple rounds fired, and authorities are working to find out if there were various weapons involved. At this time, there is no one in custody, according to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Keven Bethel.

150 Mass Shootings in the United States This Year

So far, the United States (U.S.) has already had 150 mass shootings, including the Memorial Day shooting mentioned in this article. Statistically, that is enough for each state to have three shootings so far. What will the current administration do to address this rising issue? In 2024, the U.S. had 576 mass shootings, and we are quickly trending towards that number, or higher, this year already.

Currently, the injured survivors are in “stable condition,” including the three teenagers who were among those injured, according to Bethel. There were around 1,000 people at a cookout, of which at least 200 were juveniles when the gunfire happened. The two individuals who are now dead due to this shooting have not been released yet, but we do know that they were both adults- one man and one woman.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker spoke to the public about the mass shooting that happened in Fairmount Park yesterday. Parker said that the shooting was a “heinous act of violence that was inhuman with no regard for human life.” Parker also said that she would “use all federal and local authorities to track down those responsible.” As more details emerge, New Leaf News will continue to keep the public updated.
