Netflix’s One Piece manages to transcend beyond expectations through the care of Tomorrow Studios. As fans wait for Season 2’s finished production, the Straw Hats’ doctor have made his debut. Meet Tony Tony Chopper and his live-action voice actress, Mikaela Hoover. She expressed her excitement over her role on Instagram after the announcement: “Eeeeek! Such a dream! Thank you!”
Who is Mikaela Hoover?
Mikaela Hoover found a steady acting career as playing one-time and side characters since 2008. Her name later gained attention after joining Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Through the trilogy, Hoover played Nova Prime’s assistant (GotG Vol. 1) and voiced Floor the Rabbit (GotG Vol. 3).
It was not her first time stepping into the world of comics either. Back in 2010, Hoover played Holly in James Gunn’s superhero comedy, Super. She was a comic store clerk who sold Frank Darbo (Rainn Wilson) his hero costume. Her Instagram highlights a Super comic strip interaction between her and The Holy Avenger (Nathan Fillion). Hoover later joins James Gunn again in Suicide Squad (2023). She played the Corto Maltesean President’s assistant, Camila. She returns to the DC Universe as Cat Grant for Superman (2025).
Live-Action Chopper 2025 Reveal
On May 31st, Tudum streamed their summer announcement lineup. Viewers caught a glimpse of Wednesday Season 2, Squid Game Season 3, Stranger Things Finale Season, and Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein. Then, live-action One Piece fans were offered a first look at Chopper’s full model.
Original series creator, Eiichiro Oda announced the cotton-candy loving reindeer will appear in Season 2 back in September 2023. Viewers later caught a glimpse of Chopper’s backside during Geeked Week 2024. Netflix’s Luffy actor Iñaki Godoy gave a short tour of the set, showing his next crew mate in the middle of a press conference.

In this reveal, Chopper shyly introduces himself to the audience. He accidentally slips down the stairs, calling for a doctor, then realizes, “Oh wait! I am a doctor.” Godoy cheers him on to bravely announce Season 2 premiering in 2026. Tomorrow Studios and Oda brought the jolly reindeer to life with visual-effects company, Framestore. Supervisor Victor Scalise felt honored in assisting the production. He tells Tudum, “We’ve got a great team leading with Chopper. I believe, when the audience sees him, they’re going to be happy.” Within hours, his live-action counterpart has received welcoming praise.
Becoming Tony Tony Chopper
Tudum later released an article revealing the actress, Mikaela Hoover, is responsible for his kid-like voice. By using motion capture, her facial expressions are translated into a 3D rig. Animators then adjusted them for Chopper’s face. She was professionally trained for it during Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Floor.
As a fan of the show, she’s happy to be given the opportunity. “What excited me about playing Chopper is the tug of war between his standoffishness and his big heart,” Hoover told in the interview. “I believe there is a little Chopper in all of us. We want to be loved and accepted. We go through great lengths to keep the people we love safe. There’s purity in his heart, reminding us of what’s good in the world.”
Her analysis on the tiny healer speaks volumes through her vocal portrayal. It sounds warm, humble, and friendly. Hoover’s Chopper will be appearing on Drum Island for Season 2 alongside her co-stars, Katey Sagal and Mark Harelick. In August 2024, Sagal took the role of Chopper’s mentor, Dr. Kureha, after Jamie Lee Curtis had scheduling conflicts. Harelick will be playing as Chopper’s former caretaker, Dr. Hiriluk. Netflix’s One Piece is set return with Season 2 in 2026.
