Cyndi Lauper

When you think of 80s dance music, not many are higher on the list than Miss Cyndi Lauper. After we learned that “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” the second single, “Time After Time,” from the album “She’s So Unusual,” hit number one on the U.S. Billboard Charts. The larger-than-life persona, along with the bright, colorful wardrobe and style, took the music and entertainment scene by storm.

She was one of the most recognizable figures in the 80s, selling millions of records worldwide. So whether you’re jamming out in your car, hearing the soundtrack to a favorite movie, or at a concert where she helps your lost sister find her seats with your beer, Lauper is one of a kind.

Cyndi Lauper Loses Billboard’s Top Spot Virginity

The year is 1984, a few months before Madonna released “Like a Virgin,” Cyndi Lauper celebrated losing her Billboard top spot virginity with the timeless hit “Time After Time.” She may have been one of the spokespersons for the “I want my MTV” promotion, but fans were all screaming, “We want Cyndi!” This was just the beginning of her craze. Lauper’s music was featured on numerous movie soundtracks at the time and continues to be featured to this day.

Not only was her music felt by millions, but her presence also played a huge role in the entertainment world. Her collaboration with wrestling manager Captain Lou Albano made her a perfect candidate to help promote the original WrestleMania in 1985. Vince McMahon and the World Wrestling Federation used the popularity of the young rocker for MTV’s Rock N’ Wrestling campaign to help further wrestling’s popularity into the mainstream.

That same year, Lauper followed up with another huge hit. Fortunately for fans, they didn’t have to survive any booby traps or obstacles to reach this gold. “The Goonies R Good Enough” was the flagship song for the blockbuster movie The Goonies. So if you were trying to run from the Fratelli’s, doing the “Truffle Shuffle,” eating Rocky Road, serving a giant deformed monster some fish heads, or trying to find gold, at least you have a banger to listen to.

Final Thoughts

Cyndi Lauper has been entertaining fans for over 40 years. On June 9, 1984, her single “Time After Time” reached number one on the United States Billboard Top 100 chart. I am told the rock legend still puts on a great show. Hell, a good friend of mine sent me a video of Lauper, mid-concert, stopping her performance to help her sister (who had hands full of beer) find her front-row seats. How can you not love a performance like that? Anyone who helps me get my cold drink in my hands faster is good in my book!

Throughout all the time that has passed, I will leave you with this: “If you’re lost, you can look, and you will find me, time after time. If you fall, I will catch you; I’ll be waiting. Time after time!”
