The Tiny Chef Show made its debut on Nick Jr. on September 9, 2022. The wonderful Tiny Chef captured the hearts of children and adults through his positive attitude through culinary creativity. After three years with the vegetarian chef, Tiny Chef Productions suddenly received a cancelation notice from the network. The show’s audience did not agree with Nickelodeon’s decision and voiced their opposition throughout social media to save his children’s cooking show.
Who is Tiny Chef?
The Tiny Chef Show is a stop-motion live-action show produced by lead creator Rachel Larsen. She’s known for her animation contributions to Coraline, ParaNorman, and Isle of Dogs. As a proud vegan, she wanted to show how she embraced her dietary journey. Her idea influenced her to create the mysterious herbivore, Tiny Chef. With her production partners, Ozlem “Ozi” Akturk and Adam Reid, this talented bean starred in a webshow series.
But he became more than a passionate vegetarian. The herbivore’s earliest video was posted on YouTube on July 18, 2018. The video showed him playing the banjo with the following description, “Tiny Chef loves to cook first and foremost, but he’s also been an avid banjo player for the past 10 years. He insists that one should never have one passion. He loves to pluck around while the bread is baking or when vegetables roast in the oven.” Larsen wanted to establish the chef’s personality to show children and adults encouragement.
His first cooking video was later posted on September 21. Inspired by mini food chefs, Chef utilizes a human’s kitchen while using miniature cooking ware. His cooking segments are where the ‘live-action’ portion is from. All of the ingredients on set are real food. In a month, he became a beloved animated icon and attracted Frozen actress Kristen Bell. Hers and Tiny Chef Productions’ partnership led them to a media contract with Imagine Entertainment. The herbivore is also provided a voice from comedian Matt Hutchinson.
Tiny Chef Gets Vocal About Show Cancellation
The Tiny Chef Show gained massive success after Nickelodeon offered Larsen a production contract on August 12, 2020. It aired in a two-episode format, involving the chef and his friends in various situations. They often referred to him as Cheffy, TC, or Cheffino when around company. Known celebrities narrated and guest-starred alongside the eccentric bean, including RuPaul, Rebel Wilson, and fellow Nick Jr. host, Josh Dela Cruz. These episodes taught the audience life lessons and explored vegan food options.
The Tiny Chef Show even surpassed the network’s expectations by winning two Annies and an Emmy. It ran for a total of three seasons, with the final episodes airing on March 14, 2025. While Larsen, Arktuk, and Reid were making preparations for their next season, Nickelodeon informed them that their show was canceled in June. Instead of sharing the knowledge with news outlets first, the creators decided to animate Tiny Chef expressing his sadness over the situation on June 25:
Thousands of his fans shared their condolences with the inspirational cook. American Chinese food chain Panda Express joined the conversation. They said in a heartwarming manner, “Tiny apron, huge legacy. You’ll always have a place at our table, Chef. Maybe we can even teach you how to use a wok!” A follow-up video shows him playing through his devastation on his banjo.
According to The Wrap, the viral Nick Jr. stop-motion was dropped during the Paramount-Skydance merger. Larsen explained in the interview, “We always try to play Chef’s life authentically and [the cancellation] was a big moment-this was his dream show.” Tiny Chef Productions posted animated shorts and images throughout the week as their call-to-action. The team advertised their crowdfunding page to secure the show’s continuation with #saveTinyChef from June 26 to June 30.
Pushing Forward with Fan Support
On July 1st, The Tiny Chef Show social media pages posted a final crowdfunding update. It reads in Chef’s dialect, “The team is getting ready to turn on the tiny cameras in Chef’s tree stump home because you all have saved [the show]! The outpouring of love messages, fan art, and donations has truly meant the world to us. We are excited to get back to work and capture Chef’s next journey. From the blottom of our hearts, fank yew.”
Tiny Chef will continue his production thanks to the overwhelming support of old and new fans. Even the celebrities he met encouraged him to help keep his dream alive. Bay Area rapper E-40 surprised social media with his call-to-action after fans compared his culinary passion with the Chef.
