The New York Knicks are hiring two-time Coach of the Year Mike Brown. He was fired after a 13-18 record to start last season with the Sacramento Kings. During the 195 games he coached for the Kings over the past three seasons, Brown had a record of 107-88 and made the playoffs in his first season of coaching the Kings. He received his second Coach of the Year award after this season.
Brown was a head coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers during LeBron James‘ first stint in Cleveland. It was here where he would win his first Coach of the Year honor in 2009. After bouncing between the Cavs and the Lakers, he would serve as an assistant head coach for the Golden State Warriors from 2016 to 2022. As a head coach, he has a record of 454-304, a 59.9 winning percentage.
How Will This Impact New York?
This is an excellent hire for the Knicks. Brown has experience coaching high-usage guards, such as Jalen Brunson and De’Aaron Fox. This New York roster is riddled with talent and signed Guerschon Yabusele in free agency, a nice depth player. This team is looking to make another deep playoff run, following its appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals last season, where it lost to the Indiana Pacers in six games.

After firing coach Thibodeau, I assumed they would look for a veteran head coach. Someone who has been associated with successful organizations can help establish the tone for this era of the team and organization. New York has all the ingredients to be a contender in the wide-open Eastern Conference. The only question is whether Mike Brown will be the guy to take this team over the top?
