Jury selection is underway at the County Justice Center in Pinellas County, Florida, to decide the fate of Shelby Nealy. In 2023, Nealy pleaded guilty to murdering his ex-wife, Jamie Ivancic, as well as members of her family and their three Bichon-Frises. The selected jurors will determine his penalty for the murders of Richard Ivancic, Laura Ivancic, and Nicholas Ivancic. Nealy will either spend the rest of his life in prison or be sentenced to death for his horrific crimes.
The Crime
After a days-long investigation, Shelby Nealy’s former wife, 21-year-old Jamie Ivancic, was found buried in the yard of the divorced couple’s Port Richey home. Officials believe she had been dead for a year before she was found. She had not been seen in that time by her friends or family. They estimate she was murdered in January 2018, and the body was found the following year.
During the investigation, law officials learned that Shelby Nealy was responsible for Jamie’s death. They claim he pretended for months that she was alive by sending texts and photos of their children to her family. When Jamie’s family became suspicious of never hearing her voice, Nealy felt the only solution was to drive to their home and kill them. He took more innocent lives in an attempt to cover up his nefarious actions.
In 2019, Nealy was arrested in Ohio with his two children after he was caught with a stolen car taken from his former in-laws’ home in Tarpon Springs, Florida, where several bodies and three dogs were found. Police revealed that those bodies belonged to Jamie’s parents, Richard and Laura, and her brother James. He reportedly told the police he intended to return to the home where their bodies lay to dispose of them.

Guilty Plea
Shelby Nealy was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated cruelty. He pleaded guilty in 2023 to manslaughter with a weapon in the death of Jamie to reduce the first-degree murder charge and receive a lesser sentence. He initially was sentenced to 30 years in prison instead of facing trial and the death penalty.
Nealy later pleaded guilty to the additional three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated cruelty charges in the deaths of Jamie’s mother, father, brother, and the 3 Bichon-Frises. He is being sentenced for these six counts and could face the death penalty if the jury finds he deserves it. Shelby Nealy did not show remorse for his cruel actions; therefore, the jury should not show him any mercy.
The Death Penalty
In 2017, Florida amended the death penalty to require a unanimous jury before a judge can impose it. However, in 2023, it was amended again, lowering it from unanimous to a simple majority of 8 out of 12 jurors. Since the murders took place before the law change, Nealy’s attorney wants it tried under the unanimous jury rule. Florida is one of the leading states in executions year after year, with 269 inmates currently sitting on death row, awaiting the inevitable.
Shelby Nealy will face further repercussions for his inconceivable actions. Thirty years does not carry enough justice as opposed to life in prison. Even if this jury were to sentence him to death, it could still be decades before he is executed. The current longest-sitting death row inmate in Florida is Tommy Zeigler, who has been waiting for death since his conviction on July 19, 1976. He was also convicted of murdering his wife and her parents. However, he maintains his innocence, unlike Nealy.
It is unknown how long the jury will deliberate on his sentencing once they are chosen. In complex cases, it can take longer for them to review the evidence. However, in this case, Nealy is already serving time for one murder and has pleaded guilty to the current charges. With sufficient information, deliberation can take only a few hours, and Shelby Nealy could be on death row by Tuesday.
