The Legend of Zelda movie is eventually going to come out. It’s slated for release in 2027, though a delay moved it out of the same weekend as Sonic the Hedgehog 4, probably for good reason. That’s not terribly far from now, as it will be out within two years if the release date holds. It’s approaching rather rapidly given that there’s been very little action on the movie. We barely know anything about who’s involved.
Until today, that included any of the cast. Speculations and leaks rose and fell, including one that Hunter Schafer was going to be Princess Zelda. Now, Sony has officially announced the actors for both Link and Zelda, and it’s not Schafer playing the princess.
Link and Zelda Cast in Zelda Movie
According to the official Nintendo X account and a report from Variety, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is going to be playing Link. If that’s not a name you’re familiar with, that’s because he’s a very young actor without a ton of work under his belt. He has nine total credits on IMDb.
Among those nine, the most notable are Pinocchio (2022), The Sandman, and The Haunting of Bly Manor. He does have two award nominations as well: 2023 Outstanding Ensemble Award (Young Artist Awards) and 2024 Best Lead Performer in a Comedy (Canadian Screen Awards), both for his work on Son of a Critch.
The princess will be played by Bo Bragasan. Again, that name may not be familiar. She also only has nine credits to her name. Among them, Renegade Nell and King and Conqueror are the most notable. Bragasan has one award win already. She won as part of The Merit, which took home the win at the Best Shorts Competition in 2021. Nintendo also shared a look at them in costume.
As of now, this is the only casting announcement made. Shigeru Miyamoto, a producer on the film, said in the official reveal, “This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragasan-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san. I am very much looking forward to seeing them on the big screen.” He also thanked everyone for their patience and reiterated that May 7, 2027 is the release date after being pushed back.
Movie Crew
We don’t yet know any of the other actors. We also don’t really know what characters will be involved. Ganondorf is an extremely safe assumption, but they may or may not use the likes of Mipha, Tulin, Tingle, Skull Kid, Midna, King Rheboam, King Rauru, Navi, or Fi. As of now, we know for certain that the movie has Link and Zelda and they have their actors.
The crew is much more known. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball, who also helmed the Maze Runner trilogy, is directing. It’s being produced by Miyamoto and Avi Arad, a noted Sony producer who has worked on films like Spider-Man. Derek Connolly and T.S. Nowlin are writing the movie. Precious few other crew members have been revealed at this time.
Final Boss
At long last, some real, legitimate information is trickling out about the Zelda movie. For a long time, fans have speculated about who the actors would be. Wes Ball’s role has been revealed for a long time, but there was a huge gap between information dumps as the movie’s release crept closer. Now, things may finally begin rolling, as more castings will need to be announced before filming, which will begin soon with a May 2027 release date on the horizon.
