Lumiose City, Pokémon Legends, Nintendo, Switch 2

Today marked the latest Pokémon Presents, a sort of franchise-specific Nintendo Direct. The Pokémon Company spent aboit 25 minutes on Tuesday morning presenting (as the name of the show suggests) literally everything they’re doing, from a new television show to game updates and more.

Of course, the biggest takeaway is a greater look in more detail about the next upcoming big game: Pokémon Legends: Z-A. It’s been announced for a while, but fans of the series got probably one last big look at what it’s going to entail before October arrives. Nintendo, at the same time, announced a bundle with the Switch 2.

New Bundle and Trailer Revealed at Pokémon Presents

Fans have gotten brief glimpses into what Pokémon Legends: Z-A, a bit of a sequel of sorts to Pokémon Legends: Arceus, will include. But now, we have a much greater sense of what’s in store. In Lumiose City, trainers must learn the truth behind the mystery of rogue Mega Evolved Pokémon that are destroying a city designed to house people and Pokémon. Of course, trainers will have to get their own Mega Pokémon, including the new Mega Dragonite. Other new Mega evolutions will be revealed once the game is live on October 16.

You’ll be able to join Team MZ, whose objective is to protect Lumiose City. It is led by Naveen, a budding fashion designer, Lida, a dancer, and others. This crew will make up most of your playthrough, as they will be your counterparts in the fight against rogue Mega Pokémon. Based on all the trailers, virtually all of the gameplay will be within the city.

Normally, that might be problematic, but since Lumiose City is full of Pokémon, there’s not as much need for a wild area. This also implies that the semi-open-world concept from Pokémon Legends: Arceus is probably not returning this time around. However, it does appear that the catching without needing to battle mechanic is back, which is a welcome sight.

Also, trainers can battle at night to rank up from Z all the way to A. There will be plenty of battles, perhaps more so than in other titles. A major boss, Corbeau, leads a shady organization that is undoubtedly connected to the Mega mystery.

There is more than just battling, though. Trainers can customize their appearance and even style their Pokémon, especially if they’ve partnered up with Furfrou. There will also be plenty of side quests from NPCs to keep you occupied while you strive to save the city.

Perhaps the best news all day was that Nintendo would be releasing a digital Switch 2 bundle with the title. The only previous one was the Mario Kart World bundle that was available on launch. It was very difficult to get, so hopefully the supply will be prepared for the demand this time.

Just like the original bundle, the game and console will be available for $499. Separately, or if you wish to have the physical copy of the game (or already have a Switch 2), you would spend $520. It’s not an $80 game like Mario Kart World, but this is an economic bundle.

It is similarly designed to promote the sale of the console. Nintendo usually loses money on console sales but makes up for it in game sales. This is another way to offset it, because it’s cheaper to get the console with the game than separately, and it will surely entice more people to get a console to get the game at a cheaper price.

Final Evolution

The Pokémon Presents may not have revealed a new mainline game for Generation 10 or any remakes of previous generations, but there’s still plenty to be excited about. With the dawn of a new console generation only recently passed, the future is bright for this franchise and Nintendo.
