Minnesota Vikings superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson suffered a left hamstring strain at yesterday’s practice and will be held out of drills indefinitely, according to Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell. The team will evaluate him next week. Jefferson sat out the second half of Thursday’s practice after experiencing tightness in both of his legs. Tests were done, and he was diagnosed with a very mild hamstring strain.

The Vikings were obviously ecstatic to discover that their young playmaker had not sustained a more serious injury. With the injury occurring at the beginning of training camp, the team has ample opportunity to give Jefferson the time he needs to rest and rehab the injury.
O’Connell indicated that his number one offensive weapon will be good to go for their NFL season opener in Chicago on Sept. 8. JJ’s continued presence in the lineup is crucial if Minnesota hopes to repeat their 2024 regular season success and hopefully make an extended playoff run.
Jefferson missed seven games in the 2023 season due to a severe right hamstring strain suffered at U.S. Bank Stadium that was the start of their precipitous slide in the division rankings. This fall would see their record drop to 7-10, and they would end up tied for last in the division with the Chicago Bears. When asked about the injury, O’Connell said.
“We’re going to be really cautious, obviously. It is not the same leg from a couple years ago. “I credit Justin just for his ability to recognize how he was feeling and the fact we were able to avoid anything major. All I worry about is the next time we’re evaluating him and see how he can start working back in. We’re going to want to be smart with him knowing we’ve got quite a bit of time to prepare. We know Justin, at this point in his career, is going to be ready to roll.”
Lost Time with McCarthy
Jefferson’s absence means less time working with new Vikings starting quarterback, J.J. McCarthy. O’Connell, when asked if he was disappointed about this, said. “Disappointing is the wrong word,” O’Connell said. “I think those guys have already developed a rapport.” With Jefferson out of the lineup, other wide receivers like Jalen Nailor, Tai Felton, and Silas Bolden will have more chances to work on their timing and rapport with McCarthy.
Jefferson is in his sixth season with the Vikings, and he has been named to four Pro-Bowls and selected to the All-Pro Team four times. In addition, he was the AP Offensive Player of the Year in 2022.
