NFL, Washington Commanders, Terry McLaurin

The Washington Commanders have been on an upward trajectory since drafting Jayden Daniels. However, they from their best receiver, Terry McLaurin, might be departing. McLaurin requested a trade from the team after asking for a contract extension. Let’s dive into the reasons and potential suiters for “Scary Terry!”

Commanders’ WR Trade Request

Terry McLaurin requested a trade from the Washington Commanders this afternoon—a surprising turn of events for a player who is well-deserving of a new contract. Last season, this organization had a record of 12-5, their first double-digit win season since 2012, and McLaurin was a large part of it. He led the team in catches and yards last season. McLaurin has also led the team in receiving yards every season since 2019.

There is no doubt this is money driven. With the contract discussions with the Commanders stalled, this puts pressure on the organization to get a deal done. As with all the new contracts receivers are signing, it was inevitable that McLaurin would want to be paid like his peers. The league-wide belief is that he has been seeking at least $30 million per season and the Commanders haven’t been willing to meet that number.

Top Suitors

The New England Patriots are a team that is rumored to be heavily interested in the wideout. Pairing McLaurin with Drake Maye would be an interesting 1-2 punch. As a Steelers fan, I would love to see Pittsburgh trade for him. Trading for DK Metcalf and Terry McLaurin would make the argument that they have a top three receiving duo. However, if you trade for him, you’d have to pay him top money.

Final Thoughts

This is the fourth time over the past three seasons in which a young, above-average receiver has requested a trade: Tee Higgins of the Bengals, Deebo Samuel, and Brandon Aiyuk for the 49ers. Now McLaurin has joined the list. All three receivers were given extensions, so it’s possible that this gets worked out and he stays with the Commanders.
