The Jacksonville Jaguars are coming off a terrible season and entered this past offseason with more questions than answers. After a Divisional Round appearance two seasons ago, this team has been interesting for a better lack of terms. It seems as if this franchise started going downhill after its franchise QB started suffering injuries. That’s a story for a different day. Let’s jump straight into this offseason, as the Jaguars made some of the most significant moves in the NFL.
Jacksonville Jaguars 2024-2025 Season Recap
The Jaguars are coming off a 4-13 season. With the offensive talent this team has, it is hard to see their season ending the way it did. Their franchise quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, only played in ten games. In those ten games, the Jags had a record of 2-8. It is hard to believe that just two seasons ago, this team completed one of the biggest comebacks in playoff history and had a chance to beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Arrowhead in the Divisional Round. Let’s turn our focus to the last few months.
Offseason Acquisitions
To start with the NFL Draft, the Jaguars took one of the most significant swings any team did this offseason. Trading away next season’s first-round draft pick and this year’s second-round pick (36th overall) for one of the more talented prospects the NFL has ever seen, Travis Hunter. Hunter showed the ability in college to be a high-impact player on both offense and defense. After drafting Brian Thomas Jr. last year, Hunter and Thomas will be a dynamic 1-2 punch.
Let’s turn to free agency. Jacksonville brought in talent at every level. On the defensive side of the ball, the Jaguars brought in CB Jourdan Lewis and S Eric Murray to help a secondary that was ranked 32nd last season against the pass. As for the offense, one of their splash plays was acquiring OG Patrick Mekari from the Baltimore Ravens. Mekari should help keep their franchise QB upright. However, their biggest addition might not have been a player.
After their 4-13 season, the Jags fired head coach Doug Peterson. They signed former offensive coordinator from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Liam Coen, to fill the head coaching role. Coen was the mind behind one of the best offenses in the NFL last season, ranking in the top five in PPG, passing yards per game, rushing yards per game, TDs, and yards per play. If Coen can similarly improve the Jaguars, the AFC South could look very different next season.
Offseason Departures
For all the talent and potential, the Jaguars brought into the building, a lot of talent walked out the door. Receivers Josh Reynolds and Devin Duverney walked in free agency while Gabe Davis was released. Pass-catching tight end Evan Engram also left this offseason.
For a player whose career has been up and down, he is still one of the largest mismatches in the NFL. On the defense, CB Ronald Darby left for the Houston Texans in the open market. Not that he was a significant contributor for the Jags, but still someone who brought depth to a position of need.
Opinions on Jaguars’ Offseason
I have always been higher on the Jacksonville Jaguars than most. I believe in the talent of Trevor Lawrence and that he is an above-average QB who has problems staying healthy and with ball security. The only question mark I have on this team is their offensive line. On paper, this team has the potential to have one of the best defensive lines in the league. They are littered with high draft picks and if they can put it together, don’t be surprised to see them win the AFC South. I am excited to see what is to come in Jacksonville this upcoming season.
Final Thoughts
This is a team that has put itself in a position to win its division and be a legitimate contender in the AFC. If T-Law can stay healthy and limit his turnovers, he could have a season like his 2022-2023 campaign. I could also see this team attempting to make a move at the trade deadline to shore up any loose ends if the division race is close.
