The Los Angeles Lakers have signed their next face of the franchise. After trading for Luka Doncic last season, there was a question about whether he was entering the last year of his contract. When trading for a 26-year-old superstar, they needed to lock him up long-term. Is this a good contract, and how does this impact the Lakers? Let’s jump into Doncic’s extension!
Lakers Extend Doncic
For a franchise as historic as the Lakers have been, they have been home to many superstars over time. They signed Doncic to a three-year $165 million contract extension, with a player option in 2028. This keeps him out of free agency next summer and is committed to the team and organization for the near future. Doncic’s extension also makes him eligible for a projected five-year $417 million contract in 2028.
What Does This Mean?
This locks up the face of the next iteration of the franchise long-term. When you bring in moves such as signing DeAndre Ayton, you are looking to contend for the near future and still keeping flexibility for the post-LeBron James era. This keeps Luka happy with the massive payday, and when one of your best players is happy, it trickles down the roster.
Thoughts on the Contract
This is a no-brainer for the Lakers and for Luka Doncic. As previously mentioned, when a team trades for a player of his caliber, they must move heaven and earth to keep him. Luka is already a “blank check” player. Hand him a blank check and have him write his contract. He has been one of the best players since his second year in the league and will continue to be that for the foreseeable future.
Final Thoughts
As long as Luka Doncic and LeBron James are on the Lakers, they are a title contender. With James entering year 23 and potentially his last season, there has to be a plan.
