The New England Patriots will be an interesting team to watch next season. Last year, the Pats were one of the worst teams in the NFL, despite flashes from their rookie quarterback Drake Maye. One of their first orders of business was to bring in a new head coach to “reset the culture.” Bring in someone who has playoff experience and can rally the team around him. We will dive into that, but first, let’s recap what happened last season for the New England Patriots!
Patriots’ 2024-2025 Season Recap
Last season’s New England Patriots aren’t your dad’s Pats or even your older brother’s. With a 3-14 record, this was the team’s second consecutive year with a record that bad. It was also the first year without future Hall of Fame head coach Bill Belichick. After selecting Drake Maye with the 3rd pick in the 2024 draft, it marked the beginning of the next chapter in Patriot football. This organization made a massive decision to bring in a coach who has familiarity with the team,
Offseason Additions
After firing the first-time head coach Jerod Mayo, New England brought in Patriots legend and former Titans’ head coach Mike Vrabel. Vrabel has had excellent coaching success, winning Coach of the Year honors in 2021, making the AFC Championship in 2020, and coaching Tennessee to the number one seed in 2021. With a record of 54-45, a 54.5% winning percentage, he is a massive upgrade over Mayo.
Let’s turn to the players. The Pats spent the most money in free agency. To start with the offense, they brought in WR Stefon Diggs from the Texans, OT Morgan Moses from the Jets, C Garrett Bradbury from the Vikings, and WR Mack Hollins from the Bills. That is an abundance of talent for an offense that was 30th in points per game last season.
Regarding the defensive talent, they brought in just as much as they did on offense. New England signed defensive lineman Milton Williams from the Eagles, edge rusher Harold Landry III from the Titans, cornerback Carlton Davis III from the Lions, linebacker Robert Spillane, defensive end K’Lavon Chaisson, and safety Marcus Epps from the Raiders.
All the talent they brought in will help, especially on the D-Line. The Patriots ranked 32nd in the NFL with only 28 sacks last season and 30th in takeaways. If they are going to compete for a Wild Card spot, it starts with the talent synergizing together.
We aren’t finished yet. New England also had a great draft class. They selected tackle Will Campbell with the 4th pick. Campbell gave one of the best quotes in his post-draft interview on stage. When asked what kind of tone he is going to set on this offensive line, Campbell said, “I’m going to fight and die to protect them with everything I got.” I am not a Pats fan in the slightest, but he made me a fan of his for the entirety of his career with that quote.
In the second round, they drafted a talented running back, TreVeyon Henderson, out of “THE” Ohio State. Lastly, with their third-round pick, the Patriots selected Kyle Williams, a wide receiver out of Washington State who has the speed to take the top off a defense. Those two picks just add to the offensive talent New England acquired in free agency.
Offseason Losses
This franchise lost the last two players from its previous Super Bowl team. Their center, David Andrews, retired, and long snapper Joe Cardona was released. Other than those two, this organization just lost bench players, except for their kicker, Joey Slye. It’s clear that the additions will outweigh the losses for this franchise this offseason.
Opinions on Patriots’ Offseason
In baseball terms, the Patriots hit a home run. I love the accumulation of talent they brought in. Drake Maye showed moments of greatness and was one of the few bright spots on a bad team last year. The best additions to the team were Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Those two men shall rebuild this team to its former glory. Does that mean they will make 10 Super Bowls in 20 years? No, however, it does mean this will be a team in the mix for the foreseeable future, assuming Maye continues his upward trajectory.
Final Thoughts
This is an interesting team. A franchise once renowned as the best in the NFL has experienced a few subpar seasons. This offseason was a significant step in the right direction. Going from a team that was reluctant to spend money on free agents to spending over $300 million is not “Patriot-like.” However, all things must evolve or fade. This is the first step of turning the page on the Tom Brady era of New England.
