The New York Jets are coming off an offseason of hope, with the turnaround from head coaches and “savior QBs” to a familiar face and someone who could bring a spark to their offense. From a team that had serious playoff aspirations to a hopeful minor rebuild, this team has talent. It’ll be interesting to see how this season plays out. Let’s dive into the moves and players the Jets brought in to turn this plane around. Let’s start with how last season went!
New York Jets’ 2024-2025 Offseason Recap
Last season, the Jets were hopeful with Aaron Rodgers coming back after suffering a torn Achilles tendon in his first start in 2023. Unfortunately, they finished last year with a 5-12 record. There were moments of brilliance where Rodgers looked similar to his time in Green Bay and then there were times he looked like the 39-year-old he is. They finished in the bottom half of the AFC East for the 8th straight year. New York has made a plethora of moves, so let’s dive into the talent they brought in.
Offseason Additions
After Rodgers walked out the door to the Steelers, the Jets needed a new QB. They signed Justin Fields to a two-year $20 million contract. Getting younger and more athletic at a position of need could finally bring stability at the most crucial position. In terms of weapons, New York brought in talented WR Josh Reynolds in free agency and one of the best receiving TEs in the draft, Mason Taylor. Lastly, let’s go to the “meatheads” of the offense, the offensive line.
One of the problems the Jets have had for many years is their offensive line. Their line has been a rotating door since Nick Mangold retired back in 2016. The Jets signed C Josh Myers and OT Chukwuma Okorafor in free agency while drafting OT Armand Membou with the 7th pick in the NFL Draft. With those additions to the line, if they can just be serviceable, this team has an abundance of playmakers at their disposal. Fields needs time to get the ball in their hands.
Defensively, there are a few new names. Signing CB Brandon Stephens and S Andre Cisco should help an already great secondary. Last season, New York ranked 4th in passing yards allowed. With those signings, this could easily be one of the best defensive backfields in the NFL, if not the best.
Offseason Losses
This team lost many household names, but their losses might be mitigated. The Jets lost WR Davante Adams, EDGE Haasan Reddick, CB DJ Reed, DT Javon Kinlaw, & CBs Ashtyn Davis and Brandin Echols, as well as many others. For the majority of them, they were past their prime or not worth the asking price to re-sign them. It’s always better to release or trade a player a year too soon than a year too late. That’s what the best franchises do.
Opinions on Jets’ Offseason
This organization is headed in the right direction. Their best move was signing Aaron Glenn to take the head coaching position. If this team is going to be a sneaky team in the AFC, it starts with the head coach and will trickle its way down the roster.
When you bring in a talented QB like Fields to pair with Garrett Wilson, they have the potential to be a deadly 1-2 punch. I love their draft. The Jets addressed their offensive line needs and added another pass catcher. My favorite of theirs was Malachi Moore, a S out of Alabama. He is a high-character player with great instincts.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the Jets did an outstanding job in an attempt to reset the culture. This can be the start of the next chapter of this team. As a Steelers fan, I would have loved to keep Fields in Pittsburgh, but I think he will be successful in the Green and White. He and Wilson will be electric, and Glenn will have the defense running around and playing as physical as Detroit’s was last season. This could be a “good bad” team next year. A team that you can’t take likely, yet not in contention for a playoff berth.
