Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce

Taylor Swift has lived her life firmly in the public eye, so everything she does warrants a burst of attention and coverage. She is one of the most newsworthy people in the entire world, especially now as she continues to grow her passionate fanbase all the time. However, every now and then, something major happens that is newsworthy on its own, such as her surprising engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce, which she just announced on Instagram.

It has been roughly two years since Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift began dating, with an October game against the Chicago Bears being the first time Swift went to a Kansas City Chiefs game to support her new partner. Since then, she’s been ever-present in the stands, including at the Super Bowl, all while recording songs and touring. She rerecorded some of her albums, bought the rest of the masters, and made an entirely new record all during that time.

Now, according to her Instagram, she is officially engaged to Kelce. This marks a first for the singer who has had her relationships put under painful scrutiny for a long time. The one just prior to Kelce, with actor Joe Alwyn, went on for a long time, but the two never got engaged. Some of Swift’s songs allude to this, but either way, this is a major first for the singer/songwriter who has a 12th album coming out in a matter of weeks.

Swift confirmed the news on her Instagram account with a simple caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.” In fitting fashion, it went utterly viral. Swift has 280 million followers on the platform, and she garnered nearly four million likes in just 30 minutes at the time of writing. She revealed a delightful photoshoot that featured a stunning garden, a blistering engagement ring, and smiles all around.

According to People Magazine, the Chiefs star asked Swift to marry him with a ring by Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry, an “Old Mine brilliant cut,” to be exact. No date has yet been announced by either Swift or Kelce, so we do not know when this engagement will transition to a marriage or how they’ll go about it.

The two have become inextricable parts of each others’ lives over the last two years. Swift, as mentioned, was at plenty of NFL games, much to the chagrin of some fans who have complained about her screentime on national TV. She famously replied back that she’s just there to watch and can’t control what the cameras do and is not bothered by any angry “Brads, Chads, and dads.”

Kelce became a part of her process, too, and he even made it into some songs himself. Notably, “So High School” and “The Alchemy” include tons of references to Kelce from The Tortured Poets Department. The upcoming The Life of a Showgirl, out this October, is probably going to have even more references to her now-fiance. The two have really become one with interconnected lives, and now they are officially embarking on that next step in the coming years.

Conclusion

At times, Taylor Swift has sung and written about marriage. Sometimes, it’s been with the playful, positive outlook of a naive youth. “Love Story,” one of her most iconic earlier tracks, comes to mind. Other times, like in “You’re Losing Me,” it’s a somber reflection on the lack of a partnership like that. Pretty soon, though, her songs will undoubtedly reflect her new married life with Travis Kelce, who might be nearing retirement from the NFL anyway.
