Gophers

The Minnesota Gophers Football team heads into the 2025-26 campaign with a great deal of hope and some unanswered questions. Fielding probably his deepest team in his nine years at Minnesota, coach P.J. Fleck can draw on great depth at certain positions. However, there are some big questions as the team tries to replace some high-performing players.

Many of the polls I have read have the Gophers finishing 11th in the Big Ten Conference this season. They can exceed those expectations if some of the younger players step up to replace the team’s outgoing stars. A review of the matchup with the Buffalo Bulls will give us some sense of where this team is.

Gophers Offense vs. Bulls Defense

All eyes will be on Gopher quarterback Drake Lindsey tonight as he makes his debut start in leading the Minnesota offense. He has consumed the offensive playbook, smoothly run the offense in practice, and thrown the ball exceptionally well. Tonight will be the first true test of how far he has progressed.

The Gophers may rely a little heavier on their running attack tonight to deflect some of the attention away from Lindsey. The tandem of Darius Taylor and A.J. Turner should see a hefty load of carries tonight as P.J. Fleck’s team will look to dominate both lines of scrimmage.

When Lindsey decides to air it out, he will have a plethora of receivers to throw to. Miami (OH) transfer Javon Tracy, UCLA transfer Logan Loya, veteran Le’Meke Brockington, and redshirt freshman Jalen Smith should keep the Bulls’ secondary very busy tonight. And it remains to be seen how much All-American Koi Perich will be involved with the offense, especially in the first tilt.

Tracy may emerge from the pack as Lindsey’s number one receiver, but don’t sleep on hard-working Brockington or the talented Smith. Sometimes, a young quarterback’s best friend is his tight end, and the Gophers have a good one in the multi-talented Jameson Geers, who had a breakout season in 2005.

The Gophers had difficulty opening holes for Taylor and the other Minnesota running backs last season, and it will be interesting to see if this year’s revamped offensive line is an improvement. The team is solid up the middle with veteran Greg Johnson returning to a guard position after filling in as the Gophers’ center last year. Ashton Beers moved inside to play center this year. The redshirt junior is a heady, intelligent player who should benefit from Johnson playing on his left side.

Two transfer portal players will man the right side of the Gophers’ line. Marcellus Marshall (University of Central Florida) is penciled in at right guard, and playing next to him will be right tackle Dylan Ray (Kentucky). Both players have a ton of experience, and the hope is that they, along with the rest of the line, can jell together quickly as a unit.

The left tackle spot right now is a platoon situation with redshirt freshman Nathan Roy and Washington transfer Kahlee Tafai vying for playing time. Watching the proportion of snaps between these two combatants tonight will be intriguing.

Leading the Bulls’ defense is linebacker Red Murdock, who is the MAC Conference Preseason Player of the Year. He was second in the nation in tackles last season (156) and added seven forced fumbles. He is a highly regarded pro prospect. All MAC Conference Preseason First Team member Dion Crawford assists him at the other linebacker position. As a sophomore, Crawford ended a successful campaign with 59 tackles and 8.5 sacks.

Defensive end Kobe Stewart racked up 9.5 sacks last season. Defensive tackle George Wolo is a stout run stuffer who has missed considerable playing time due to injuries. The veteran secondary is ably led by ball-hawking cornerback Marquis Cooper and sure-tackling safety Solomon Brown.

Bulls Offense vs. Gophers Defense

On offense, the Bulls are led by their well-traveled quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson. Buffalo is Roberson’s fourth stop on his college tour, and he last started in 2023 for UConn. He is a mobile quarterback who has suffered from inconsistency in the past. Helping him out immensely will be Maxwell Award Watchlist candidate Al-Jay Henderson. He had a tremendous second half of the season in 2025, totaling 1,078 yards and nine touchdowns at season’s end.

Also returning is First Team Preseason All-MAC pick. The speedy redshirt junior led the team last season in receptions (55), receiving yards (651), and touchdown receptions (six). He is also a threat to run the ball, and he averaged 14.5 yards per punt return in 2025. Returning for the Bulls are their two All-MAC guards, Trevor Brock and Tyler Doty. They will once again open huge holes for Henderson. Long Island University transfer Jake Timm will slot in at the center position. Starting left tackle Henry Tabansi solidifies a veteran offensive line.

On the defensive front, the Gophers return two veteran tackles, Deven Eastern and Jalen Logan-Redding. They are monsters against the run, and reserves Emmanuel Karmo and Karter Menz will augment the pass rush. Flanking them are pro prospect Anthony Smith, who led the team in sacks last season with six, and former top prospect Jaxon Howard, who will hopefully take the next step up in his development. Lucas Finnessy will also see some time here.

Even with the loss of Cody Lindenberg to the NFL, the Gophers are in a feel-good mode about their linebacking core. Maverick Baranowski was the second leading tackler on the team in 2025, and veteran Devon Williams also returns. Add to that Oklahoma State transfer Jeff Roberson, true freshman Emmanuel Karmo, and Matt Kingsbury, and you have a unit poised for greatness.

The Gophers are the thinnest at the cornerback position. Losing starters Justin Walley and Ethan Robinson hurts, but at least they have returnee Za’Quan Bryan to solidify one outside spot. Iowa transfer John Nestor will handle the other side, with redshirt freshman Mike Gerald and North Carolina Central transfer Jaylen Bowden providing depth at this position. If they are healthy, Darius Green and Jai’Onte McMillan will be solid at the nickel position.

The Gophers have an embarrassment of riches at the safety position with Perich and outstanding big-play redshirt sophomore Kerry Brown, forming one of the best tandems in the league. Aidan Gousby provides experienced depth to the unit.

The Gophers have new kicking specialists with Syracuse transfer Brady Denaburg handling placekicking duties. And there is a spirited competition for the starting punting spot between UCLA transfer Brody Richter and Ouachita Baptist University transfer Tom Weston. Perich is a deadly punt and kick returner.
