Minneapolis School Shooting

A Catholic school in Minneapolis fell victim to yet another mass shooting in the United States on August 27, 2025. Two students, an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old, were among those fatally shot. 18 other students were injured. Police have since identified the suspect as 23-year-old Robin Westman, who was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after his heinous and cowardly act.

The gunman opened fire outside the church of the Annunciation Catholic school, firing through the windows. She was equipped with a rifle, shotgun, and pistol, all of which were found on her person when police arrived. According to officials, the guns were purchased lawfully and recently.

Kristi Noem, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, referred to Westman as a “deranged monster.” She stated, “This level of violence is unthinkable. Our deepest prayers are with the children, parents, families, educators, and Christians everywhere. We mourn with them, we pray for healing, and we will never forget them.

News outlets investigated the shooter further to understand the motive. According to ABC News, Westman’s driver’s license classifies her as a woman born on June 17, 2002. When she turned 18 in 2020, a name change application was submitted and approved by a district court in Minnesota, changing her name from Robert Westman to Robin Westman.

Police believe Westman to be the only suspect in the shooting and do not have any history of violence or criminal activity, nor any previous convictions related to mental health issues. They are currently looking through information to “try to determine some type of motive.” During a press conference on Thursday, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the shooter “clearly had a deranged obsession with previous mass shooters,” and she “fantasized about the plans of other mass shooters.”

Ultimately, this person committed this act with the intention of causing as much terror, as much trauma, as much carnage as possible for their own personal notoriety,” O’Hara said. The only question that remains is why. Some are speculating that it has something to do with Westman’s mother, who worked at the church until 2021 and was previously a student at the school.

Finding a Motive

In 2016, Mary Grace Westman, known to be the gunman’s mother, was hired as an administrative assistant, and in 2020, the church’s outgoing pastor described her in a post as the parish secretary. Finally, in August 2021, her career came to an end. The church announced on social media that Mary Westman was retiring after five years of service.

Officials are investigating a series of YouTube videos they believe are associated with Westman and the shooting. Two videos, which were posted the morning of the shooting, showed someone flipping through dozens of pages of notes that contained explicit doodles of weapons and middle fingers. The pages also made references to killing, and YouTube has since removed the videos. Law enforcement believes the writings on the pages show grievance, anger, and ideation of harming oneself and others.

Westman was a former employee of a cannabis dispensary for several months, but not at the time of the shooting, and ABC News confirmed with the parent company, RISE medical cannabis dispensaries. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement in their ongoing investigation and will provide any information that may assist their efforts. At this moment, our priority is to respect the investigative process, to extend our deepest sympathies to all those impacted, and to support our team through this horrific tragedy. We will not be providing additional comments at this time,” the parent company said in a statement.

Take Action

U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota Joe Thompson commented on the shooter’s writings, saying they expressed “pure, indiscriminate hate.” Thompson said the shooter was enthralled with the idea of killing children. “The shooter’s heart was full of hate,” he said. “The shooter saw the attack as a way to target the most vulnerable among us.”

If only this shooting were the first of the year or a rare occurrence. This incident marks the 285th mass shooting to occur in 2025 and is recorded as one of the largest. Unfortunately, thoughts and prayers are not enough to save the children of this country. Action needs to be taken now, and lawmakers need to realize that they should not be making statements like Kristi Noem’s several times a month in a calendar year.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey also made a statement that “This kind of evil should never happen.” He also does not want this shooting to be misconstrued as what it truly is, which is a cowardly and senseless act of violence. “Anybody who is using this as an opportunity to villainize our trans community, or any other community out there, has lost their sense of common humanity. We should not be operating out of a place of hate,” he said. “Kids died today,” he continued. “This needs to be about them. This needs to be wrapping our arms around these families.”
