The matchup of the 1-0 Minnesota Vikings against the 0-1 Atlanta Falcons tonight on Sunday Night Football has all the makings of a trap game. On the one hand, the Vikings are riding high after their Monday Night Football fourth-quarter comeback against the Chicago Bears last week. Second-year Minnesota quarterback J.J. McCarthy flipped the switch and went from being a struggling signal caller in his NFL debut to a calm, cool, and poised veteran. But the injury bug has hit the Vikings with a force this young NFL season.
They entered the season minus two regulars, Christian Darrisaw (recovery from knee surgery) and safety Harrison Smith (undisclosed illness). And their defense suffered three additional injuries sustained in the victory against the Bears in Week 1. On the sideline tonight will be edge rusher Andrew Van Winkle (concussion protocol), inside linebacker Blake Cashman (injured reserve list, hamstring), and cornerback Jeff Okudah (concussion protocol). How the Vikings fill the void caused by these injuries will tell the tale of the tape for tonight’s game.
Keys for the Vikings Offense
McCarthy staged a remarkable comeback for a novice starting quarterback last week. He looked “not ready for prime time” for three quarters against the Bears but played like the second coming of Joe Montana to close out the game. A steadier, more consistent performance will be required of him tonight. To help ensure this, the Vikings must get Justin Jefferson involved much earlier in the contest. He and McCarthy did not seem to be in sync in the first half last week, which must be avoided tonight.
Wide Receivers Jalen Nailor, Adam Thielen, and tight end T.J. Hockenson must up their games to take pressure off the targeted Jefferson. Running backs Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason performed excellent complementary duty last week, and we should expect more of the same tonight against the Falcons. Look for an even split on playing time, with Jones being active in the passing game and Mason carrying the rushing load.
Darrisaw’s replacement against Chicago, Justin Skule, has a horrible start to his game. He was consistently beaten on speed rushes and was ineffective in opening holes for the Vikings’ rushers. He did improve as the game progressed.
And Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell found ways to get him additional help when needed. In this area, you’ll likely see a repeat performance tonight. Rookie left guard Donovan Jackson also had a rocky start but recovered nicely. However, Minnesota dodged a bullet when it was reported that center Ryan Kelly (toe) would suit up for the Atlanta game.
Minnesota’s Defensive Reserves Must Step Up
Minnesota hopes Edge Rusher Dallas Turner will have a standout game tonight, playing in place of the versatile Van Ginkel. The Vikings made a huge investment in the Alabama product at last year’s draft, and tonight is the stage for him to show off his talents. Fortunately, he is paired with the talented Jonathan Greenard at the opposite edge rush position, who has progressed into one of the most impactful edge rushers in the league.
There will also be additional pressure on defensive tackles Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave to continue to bring heat up the middle on passing downs. Hargrave had a standout performance last week, including two sacks of Bears’ quarterback Caleb Williams. Expect inside linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. to be busy against the Falcons. Vikings’ defensive coordinator Brian Flores will incorporate more blitz packages to keep Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. off balance.
Veteran reserve linebacker Eric Wilson stepped in for the injured Cashman and made some key tackles on a handful of Bears’ rushing attempts. In addition, he was responsible for relaying the defensive schemes from Flores to the rest of the defensive unit. And to top it off, he made a clutch tackle on a kick return and partially blocked a fourth-quarter Chicago punt. The free-agent pickup from the Green Bay Packers has already paid big dividends for the Vikings in 2025
And an already thin cornerback unit will see veteran Tavierre Thomas step into tonight in place of the injured Okudah to play the nickel position. That leaves only the inexperienced Dwight McGlothern and elevated practice squad member Fabian Moreau to back up Thomas and starting outside cornerbacks Byron Murphy Jr. and Isaiah Rodgers.
Footnotes
The Vikings will also be without the services of kick returner and special team’s member Ty Chandler, who was placed on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury against the Bears. The Falcons will be especially motivated to win tonight after suffering a heartbreaking 23-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday.
