It’s been over a decade since series creator Kazutaka Kodaka released Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair for the PS Vita. The series’ publisher, Spike Chunsoft, saw the opportunity to remind visual novel gamers about its success. Instead of another port release for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, the acclaimed sequel takes a different route. In Danganronpa 2×2, experience class trials in a new way and an additional story in one package.
Danganronpa 2‘s Legacy
Danganronpa 2 deserves recognition for the series’ achievements, especially with localization. During the 2010s, the Danganronpa series was region-locked in Japan. Rarely has anyone heard of Kodaka’s school horror thriller until YouTuber NicoB made a Let’s Play of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc.
According to Nico’s A Decade Gone By, he was suggested by Omori animator NessieMooo to play the unofficial English patch on PSP. She believed the then-RPG Maker developer after he enjoyed another Spike Chunsoft visual novel, 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. The decision changed Nico’s life and the series’ fate forever after publishing the first video on Aug. 28th, 2013
Nico described the experience, “The funny thing about [Danganronpa] is that it was super niche. The series grew more mainstream as time went on. Official versions of the games [Danganronpa and Danganronpa 2] began releasing after. Being the first to do something, being ahead of the trend, is super valuable. I became known as “The Danganronpa Guy.”
When Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair got an official English localization in 2014, the sequel gained more praise and became a “PS Vita Greatest Hits” title. This was due to its enticing mystery and groundbreaking plot twists of Hope’s Peak Academy’s 77th Class.
Danganronpa 2 also improved its predecessor’s court and deciphering context clue mechanics. One-on-one debates became cutting word duels, answer searching added a skateboard platformer, and rhythm battles had fixed their track sync. These changes increased player engagement alongside the alternative bonding campaign, Island Mode. It offered Hajime to interact with his classmates without the interruption of Class Trials. It will reward players with new skills that were once blocked by limited Free-Time Events.
The 9/12 Nintendo Direct Surprise Teaser
Danganronpa 2 made a surprise comeback at the 9/12 Nintendo Direct. It crashed Mario’s 40th birthday with the series’ 15th anniversary announcement. The legendary sequel will be returning as a deluxe recreation of the original PS Vita version.
In Goodbye Despair, the player takes control of Hajime Hinata, a student who can’t remember their Ultimate Talent. What was supposed to be a fun field trip on Jabberwock Island transforms into a nightmare. The dastardly teddy bear, Monokuma, overtakes the role of school headmaster from the kind rabbit, Usami. Hajime and his classmates must solve murders in Class Trials.
The game’s 2026 version, Danganronpa 2×2, offers refreshing animated sprites, fully redone 2.5D environments, and added visual effects on Trial Arguments. According to the official Spike Chunsoft coverage, there will be a main campaign and an additional story with different Class Trial victims, killing methods, and suspects. However, the new scenario piqued the Danganronpa community’s curiosity.
Is Danganronpa 2×2 a Remake or Sequel?
Danganronpa YouTubers, including NicoB, have been analyzing the teaser trailer, Kodaka’s X (then Twitter), and the official Danganronpa 2×2 website. There were a handful of clues that led the community to debate whether this recreation is purely a remake or a hidden sequel.
The leading evidence of a potential sequel is the title and the shirt change of Nagito Komaeda. The 2×2 can be read as a math equation that equals 4. YouTuber Weeby Newz explained that fans have been waiting for an official 4th installment of Danganronpa after the events of Danganronpa V3. Nagito’s wobbly shirt logo has been swapped with a jagged one. This indicates that this may not be the Ultimate Luckster that fans love.
Then there’s the newly mentioned additional story that will recreate the events of the original game. Kodaka has entrusted Danganronpa V3’s mystery writer, Takekuni Kitayama, and Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp’s scenario writer, Yoichiro Koizumi, for this altered reality. The series creator is only supervising the project with developer Gemdrops Inc. He will only be credited for Danganronpa 2’s original plot.
Finally, Kodaka has hinted at the idea of making Danganronpa 2×2 back in July 2023. NicoB discovered an X (then Twitter) troll post and shared it in his latest analysis video. It reads, “On the occasion of the 11th anniversary of Danganronpa 2, I’m truly grateful for still receiving words of love. If these voices come together, maybe one day “Super Danganronpa 2-2” will be released…just kidding!!!”
Danganronpa 2×2 is best described as a deluxe remake. The original Goodbye Despair campaign will be packaged alongside the alternate scenario. It’s too early to call it a sequel, but knowing Kodaka has messed with his fanbase in earlier games is not uncommon. Spike Chunsoft will host a demo on Nov. 29th at the Belle Salle Tokyo Nihonbashi. Players will experience the recreated First Class Trial. Danganronpa 2×2 is set to release in 2026 for the Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.
