When 2025 arrived, Australian animation studio Glitch Productions announced its first 2D cartoon, Knights of Guinevere. The Lerdwichagul brothers greenlit the show after The Owl House’s lead creator, Dana Terrace, separated from Disney. After 9 months of waiting, Glitch posted the series pilot episode on their YouTube Channel on Sept. 19th. The show’s lore clues have been laid out for viewers to investigate and theorize, while the production team continues to develop future episodes. Here’s my interpretation of the given lore.
What is Knights of Guinevere About?
Knights of Guinevere is about two friends, Frankie and Andi, who are down on their luck. Andi got fired from being a Park Planet engineer, while Frankie cycled between manufacturing and scrap fishing. Until they find a scrapped Guinevere droid, they are determined to repair her for better lifetime opportunities in M-7.
However, it won’t be easy. The Crown’s head, Olivia, will be sending her subjects to search for the droid. Frankie and Andi must operate in the Lower Labs while avoiding the labs themselves. Hopefully, they don’t encounter any potential rogue abandoned projects that could threaten their lives. But it appears this Guinevere droid carries her own.
Guinevere’s QR Code Fairytale
Terrace and Glitch left a hidden clue in the Knight of Guinevere’s pilot. There’s a frame of Frankie’s boss, Sparky, sleeping on top of the fishing boat. On his left, there’s a QR code the audience can scan. Curious viewers will be taken to Guinevere’s fairytale.
On top of the first and third pages, there are child scribbles and a text misprint. The writing could be young Olivia’s handwriting, supported by her behavior towards Guinevere in the pilot. Her child self wrote in two separate colors, with red representing mischief and black representing guilt. She heckles at the blue princess in red, “Her fault for walking off the path.” Then, in black, Olivia wrote, “My friend.”
The second page’s text covers the blue princess and her woodland friends. It appears that young Olivia is arguing with a tutor about the Crown. There are noticeable misspellings, hard-to-read sentences, and grammatical errors. Here’s my attempt at making corrections:
“The Crown keeps the castle, vassal, sword, and scepter pomped. When one passes, some like to appease, dismay, and cry, though many laughed. As for you, royal tutor, great doubts thee. A hundred thousand will swoon, then all will gallop forth. On your reckless course, move those marble legs in pendular motion in melancholy.
Paladins triumphed, or so they may seem, with a jubilee with scarlet gems, and a great pavilion spread in cloth of gold. Whether it be a monumental procession or a coronation, horns shall blare and good hounds on their hind leg. Fair is your face and fine yet laughing sadly.”
Who is the Crown?
The audience noticed that the setting of Knights of Guinevere is designed as a dystopian approach to Disney. Floating in the skies of M-7 is Park Planet (also referred to as The Park), a fantasy entertainment kingdom. In the third scene, we see Andi being labeled as a Crownie. The parts shop owner, Reggie, placed a sign to inform that they do not provide services to anyone working for The Park.
According to this world’s Walt Disney, Park mascot Guinevere is their beloved monarch. She’s used in everything involving entertainment and product placement. There’s even a jab at unwanted live-action film remakes. M-7 could be referring to the Park employees as Crownies for her royal appearance. It also supports Olivia’s social status as she acts as a hidden governing figure.
The reason why citizens show hatred towards Park Planet is that no one prioritizes the people’s needs. The second scene previews a montage of how M-7 grew to despise Guinevere’s symbolism. The more The Park expanded, the people began to suffer from environmental pollution. M-7 becomes a landfill of discarded Guinevere products, and many rely on salvaging scrap to continue business or sell them for cash.
M-7 is Based on Disney’s EPCOT
Viewers believed that Walt’s authoritarian utopia, EPCOT, inspired Knights of Guinevere’s M-7. The acronym stood for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow and was supposed to be a city expansion for Disney World. The park’s project was later abandoned due to Mickey Mouse’s company man’s intentions. EPCOT’s citizens would be seen as customers and would only consume Disney products. And the planned 20,000 employees who would be forced to keep the city operable without housing ownership.
Part of EPCOT remains in Florida, according to the official Disney World site. Most notably, the triangular-constructed sphere known as Spaceship Earth. Knights of Guinevere reference it in the Lower Labs. These abandoned spheres housed workstations for various tasks. EPCOT’s monorail system influenced The Park’s flying trolleys to transport employees and visitors. Lastly, there’s the town square constructed in a circular shape, which was designed after Walt’s city design.
The Blue Contagion
Throughout Knights of Guinevere’s pilot and January announcement teaser, the color blue has become a key detail, especially with Olivia’s Guinevere droid. Unlike other models, she contains a strange blue parasite. Viewers previously saw it act as a defense system to protect her body when the fairytale simulation encountered an error. The pilot shows further evidence that the parasite is malleable. It can produce blood and form one large intestine.
M-7 is shown to be affected by a blue substance as well. The factories’ blue smoke has infected the citizens’ immune system. Andi encounters a stranger who attempts to crush her spirit after being fired from The Park. He coughs up blue blood, and she reacts quickly to put on her protective mask. We first see this mask in the montage scene on a holographic warning sign on the lower left.
There’s also a newspaper highlight of babies being born blue. The effect is currently unknown, but we can hypothesize based on a few clues. Sparky is seen smoking a pipe, and later, his saliva is fused with a blue substance when he shakes hands with Andi. It’s made from Park scrap, which potentially contains it. Not to mention the heavy advertising for the Guinevere products, including toys and food. The same substance could be infused into it and gradually infect the population.
An Obessisson to Fix Guinevere
Olivia and Frankie’s reasoning for repairing the Guinevere droid is the most interesting part of Knights of Guinevere’s plot. Since her introduction, Olivia has been obsessed with fixing her. Her father, the Park’s entrepreneur, founded Park Planet to give her a promising future. He does mention an incident that his daughter refused to forget. He told her, “Happy birthday, sweetheart. I hope this can make up for…I don’t think I need to say it. […] Embrace it. Let your past fade away.”
There is evidence that supports it could be due to her absent mother. In her bedridden scene, a family photo of three hangs above her head. She’s dressed in all white, while her father wears his iconic purple suit. A traumatizing event could have caused her mother’s death. Maybe Guinevere’s personality replicates her mother’s kind demeanor. Her programming includes being nice to The Park’s guests. Due to the blue parasite, her droid resists.
Frankie’s original reason to repair the Guinevere droid was to prove she could be a Park engineer. After Andi got laid off, something new awakens her. The show has hinted that this Guinevere droid is actually Olivia’s. It’s the same one whose middle finger was repaired by the hacker’s younger self. She was missing her middle finger when Frankie found her in the scrap heap. When she spoke, Guinevere told her, “You’ve been such a good friend to me.”
While her new goal is to repair it for money, I don’t see Frankie going in that direction. She has a deep imagination that can sometimes project her imaginary friends. She can also easily imagine Guinevere’s princess form and voice. This woman sees her as something beyond a model. There’s a moment Frankie attempts to hold the droid’s hand, but gets pulled away by Andi. Her vision returns to reality, realizing she almost got caught in the crossfire of a Crown guardian. We can’t wait to see what she will do once Guinevere is fixed.
Support Knights of Guinevere on YouTube
Glitch posted an interview between co-founder Kevin Lerdwichagul and Terrace on Sept. 12th, a week before the pilot’s release. When he asked how she came up with the Knights of Guinevere’s concept, she gave an intriguing answer. Terrace said, “I worked for major mainstream studios for about 10 years. [I no longer work for them, and I’ve been enjoying my free time]. I poured out my cathartic feelings and [the show came to be].”
She’s referring to when The Owl House was unexpectedly shortened by Disney in 2023. The magical fantasy was praised for its LGBT+ representations, endearing storytelling, and mature themes. However, the network cut planned storylines for Season 3, certain executives supported Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill, and they wanted shows with 11-minute episodes for reruns.
Because of Glitch, Terrace could work again beside The Owl House’s co-creators, John Bailey Owen and Zach Marcus. They were offered creative freedom to create their psychological thriller. The stunning animation and spine-chilling writing are proof that they are committed to a show for a more mature audience.
