MLB, Wildcard, MLB Postseason

The first pitch of the 2025 Major League Baseball playoffs is moments away! Over the past few years, the Wildcard round of the postseason has provided some of the most exciting moments in all of sports. This year should be no different from providing fans the thrill of hanging on every pitch and every at-bat. As always, the postseason will feature some exciting matchups, but what makes these series intriguing to watch? Why must you tune into each series with the anticipation of seeing something special? Is there a chance we see a Wildcard team win the coveted World Series?

It’s been five long years since the Reds made the playoffs, but don’t remind Cincinnati fans. This year, they have the tall task of taking on the reigning, defending, undisputed World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. The young superstar Elly De La Cruz will be on full display for Major League Baseball fans to get a look at him on the big stage for the first time. The combination of power, speed, and the ability to electrify the diamond puts Cruz at the top of the list of the game’s young superstars in the making.

Another superstar making his playoff debut for the Reds will be Hunter Greene. The flame-throwing pitcher for Cinci will have his hands full against a stacked Dodgers lineup with plenty of postseason experience. While Greene’s tank is full of 100MPH gas, Clayton Kershaw’s tank, on the other hand, is almost empty. Kershaw announced last month that this would be his last season. The pitcher who defined an era will be hanging up his cleats, but what role will he play in what could be his final series? Will Team Japan, I mean the Dodgers’ starting rotation, dominate the young Reds as they did in the World Baseball Classic?

Tigers Monumental Division Collapse Holds Tall Order for Wildcard

Well, it seemed like the 2025 Detroit Tigers avoided the iceberg slightly. On July 8th, the team had a 15.5-game lead in the division, resulting in one of the biggest collapses in sports history. Even though the Tigers did their best 2024 Minnesota Twins impression, they were still able to stumble their way into the Wildcard.

Reigning Cy Young winner, Tarik Skubal, will be taking the mound in game one against the Cleveland Guardians. Cleveland has a winning record against Detroit this season. Their record may only be 8-5 against the Tigers, but for Detroit fans, it seems much worse. Not only did the Guardians destroy the hopes and dreams of the hottest team of the ’24 season, but they were repeat offenders this season by beating the Tigers down the stretch to win the AL Central.

Will the Tigers end Cleveland’s reign of terror over them? Can Skubal carry his team to the Divisional round for the second year in a row, or will the Guardians send Detroit home again, ending their season? Can AJ Hinch use his managerial genius to slay the beast?

Yankees and Red Sox Rivalry Renews in Wildcard

Is there a bigger rivalry in sports than the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox? You may think of Michigan vs. Ohio State or Lakers vs. Celtics, but they may not succeed in this American East rivalry. And better yet, it renews in the Wildcard!

The league’s favorite to win MVP, Aaron Judge, will be looking to take the Bronx Bombers into the Divisional round. The Yankees weren’t able to edge out the Toronto Blue Jays for the American East crown. For fans of the game, we love to see this bitter rival in the first round.

The Boston Red Sox have had an interesting 2025. They started with a late signing of Alex Bregman, the drama surrounding Rafael Devers, and surprised us all by making the Wild Card with an 89-73 record. Will they have enough to overcome the stacked New York Yankee lineup? Will fans witness a memorable moment in this historic rivalry?

Final Thoughts

As a baseball guy, I love the Major League Baseball postseason. Twelve teams enter the playoffs with the hope of bringing home the World Series trophy. October baseball is here on the last day of September. Four intriguing opening series that fans across the country should enjoy. With all the talent surrounding these playoffs, what are you most excited to see? Who will make it out of the Wildcard round of the playoffs to enter the ALDS?
