The Minnesota Gophers Football team, fresh off a come-from-behind victory over the Rutgers Scarlett Knights, faces college football hell tomorrow. They play the Ohio State Buckeyes Saturday night at The Horseshoe. Talk about a momentum crasher. The Gophers will play the number one team in the country on their hostile turf. Makes you just shake thinking about it.
Minnesota will play a Buckeyes team that fields the best defense in the NCAA. They also employ a dynamic young quarterback, two NFL-ready receiving targets, a speedy running back, and a massive offensive line. Gophers’ coach P.J. Fleck will have to pull several rabbits out of his hat to keep his team competitive in this clash.
Gophers Offense vs. Buckeyes Defense
The Gophers’ redshirt freshman quarterback Drake Lindsey had his coming-out party last week. Against Rutgers, he went 31-41 for 324 yards and three touchdowns. For his effort, he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week and caught the attention of collegiate talent appraisers nationwide. Against the Buckeyes, he will need at least a repeat performance to give his team a chance to win in Columbus. Lindsey and his Minnesota teammates will face the nation’s number one defense when they clash with Ohio State tomorrow night.
The Buckeyes’ defense is giving up a paltry average of 5.5 points per game. And tomorrow, if the Gophers offense is without star running back Darius Taylor, their task becomes even more difficult against a defense that only gives up an average of 132 yards a game through the air. Look for the young QB to deploy constant two-step drops, while looking to connect on quick hitters to receivers Le’Meke Brockington and tight end Jameson Geers.
He will also attempt play-action passes to redshirt freshman Jalen Smith in space, to give the young speedster room to operate. Screen passes to running backs Fame ljeboi and Cam Davis will also be popular items on the menu. But to keep the Buckeyes’ defense honest, Minnesota’s offensive line must get some push against Ohio State’s rock-solid defensive front. Look for the Gophers to try and find running room on the left side behind tackle Nathan Roy and guard Greg Johnson.
Opposing the Minnesota offense will be a Buckeyes defense full of All-Americans. Safety Caleb Downs might be the most NFL-ready player in next year’s draft. Linebackers Sonny Styles and Arvell Reese are adept at stopping the run and defending the pass. Cornerbacks Davison Igbinosun and Jermaine Mathews Jr are multi-talented playmakers. And defensive end Caden Curry brings the heat from the outside and has already racked up five sacks in 2025.
Buckeyes Offense vs. Gophers Defense
The Buckeyes’ offense is not yet the dominant force their defense is, but they may be on their way. Redshirt freshman quarterback Julian Sayin has thrown for 987 yards and 10 touchdowns, and his completion percentage is an impressive 79 percent. Freshman running back Bo Jackson has been a welcome addition to the Ohio State offense. He has accumulated 297 rushing yards, 26 receiving yards, and one touchdown in his three games.
Jeremiah Smith might be the best receiver in college football. Already this season, he has caught 28 passes for 396 yards and four touchdowns and added one rushing touchdown. At the other wideout position, projected first-round draft pick Carnell Lake has 15 receptions for 252 yards and has reached the end zone three times. Center Carson Hinzman, guard Tegra Tshabola, and tackle Austin Siereveld headline college football’s second-ranked offensive line.
The Gophers’ strength defensively is up the middle, as evidenced by their fifth-ranked rushing defense, which is only surrendering 65.5 yards a game. Tackles Deven Eastern and Jalen Logan-Redding clog the middle, allowing linebackers Devon Williams and Maverick Baranowski clean shots at opposing teams’ running backs.
Defensive end Anthony Smith is the pass-rushing threat and leads the team with four and a half sacks. Safeties, All American Koi Perich and Kerry Brown comprise one of the best tandems in college football. The Buckeyes’ talented receiving corps will test them early and often.
Prediction
This will be a tall task for the Gophers, and for them to be competitive in this game, they will need a big play by Perich and some trickery on offense. In the end, the Buckeyes are just too talented, and a big second half propels them to a 42-14 win.
