It sounds like the plot of the next Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci flick. You take an NBA legend, the Mafia, high-stakes poker games, and the movie writes itself. Unfortunately for Chauncey Billups, this is reality! The Portland Trail Blazers Head Coach and former Detroit Pistons legend, “Mr. Big Shot,” was arrested by the FBI on Thursday morning. The NBA Hall of Famer, alongside former Cleveland Cavalier Damon Jones and over thirty other participants, found themselves in handcuffs. What exactly happened? Who was involved? And what will happen to the former NBA Finals MVP?
Chauncey Billups Hall of Fame Career
Chauncey Billups began his career as a journeyman, trying to find the right team. After being drafted by the Boston Celtics, he was later traded to the Toronto Raptors in his rookie season. The future “Mr. Big Shot” then spent a couple of years in Denver and Minnesota before finding his home in Detroit. The Pistons would embrace the well-traveled point guard, and he would become the perfect leader for the “going to work” squad.
Billups would lead the ultimate “team” 2004 Detroit Pistons to an NBA Championship, shocking the world by dominating the Shaq-and-Kobe (and Malone and Payton)- led Los Angeles Lakers. The ’04 Champs are the only team to hoist the trophy without a top-75 player on the roster. “Mr. Big Shot” was named the finals MVP and became an instant Detroit legend!
Chauncey would spend most of his time in the D (well, Auburn Hills) and finish his playing career with stops in Denver, New York, and LA.. Billups has been the Portland Trail Blazers’ coach since 2021. In 2024, the former Finals MVP was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He is currently suspended by the Trail Blazers and will most likely lose his position as a result of his actions.
FBI Calls Billups’ Bluff
Since 2019, Chauncey Billups has been involved with high-stakes poker games. He and former NBA player Damon Jones were known as “Face Cards” among the large-pocket players. A rigged card game ring run by the Mafia promised high-rollers that they could play poker with these former NBA stars.
What the poker players didn’t know was even more disturbing. Marked cards being scanned, tables with a see-through glass with X-ray technology, card shufflers, and special contact lenses and glasses were all used in this “Bond villain” scheme. It is believed that four of the five Mafia families were also in this plot to steal millions.
It is reported that at least $ 7.1 million was involved in this poker scandal. Over 30 arrests have been made, including Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier. Rozier was caught tipping off bettors, giving them inside information on NBA games. One specific instance was when he played for the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets took on the Pelicans, in which Terry left the game after the first nine minutes with an apparent foot injury. What the public didn’t know at the time was that a friend of Rozier’s had placed a large bet on the under of his player props.
Final Thoughts
For those who are sports conspiracy theorists, these recent developments will help your cause. As long as sports betting or general gambling exists, scandals and controversy will continue. Even though they are popular, it may be time to regulate player props in sports betting. This will at least eliminate an individual’s opportunity to manipulate the system.
Chauncey Billups is beloved in the city of Detroit. In the heart of the “Mitten,” where winters are long and championships don’t come often, “Mr. Big Shot” is idolized. The people of Michigan are absolutely stunned by these developments and can’t believe what they’re hearing. Hopefully, we will find out his exact involvement with the case, but all in all, it has shocked Detroit and the NBA world.
