On Monday, October 27, 2025, a motorcyclist suspected of fatally shooting a sheriff’s deputy in San Bernardino, California, was knocked off his bike by another deputy in an unmarked vehicle. The motorcyclist was leading authorities on a high-speed chase, hitting upwards of 150mph on the 210 Freeway in Upland.
The Tragic Incident
A deputy responded to a call of an armed man who was allegedly threatening a woman in Rancho Cucamonga. The initial incident occurred around 12:37 p.m. on the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive. The suspect opened fire immediately on the deputy, who was shot once and later declared dead at a local hospital
. At approximately 1:20 p.m., the armed man began fleeing on his motorcycle down the 210 Freeway. Sheriff Shannon Dicus reported the suspect was traveling at speeds greater than 150 miles per hour. “You can imagine what that could have done to unsuspecting motorists on our freeway,” he said.
The suspect almost collided with a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer who was ahead in the pursuit. At 1:35 p.m., a vehicle with an off-duty deputy inside lurched toward the motorcyclist, striking the suspect and causing him to crash.
KTLA-TV captured helicopter footage of the suspect colliding with a black sedan while riding at 70 miles per hour. He was flung over the handlebars before landing on his back. The injured suspect was transported via helicopter to a nearby hospital. In the meantime, the eastbound lanes of the 210 Freeway were closed.
Loss of a Veteran Sheriff’s Deputy
Andrew Nunez was identified as the former San Bernardino sheriff’s deputy who was fatally shot while in the line of duty. He was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton following the incident and pronounced dead at the hospital. He is a six-year veteran of the police department and leaves behind a pregnant wife and a 2-year-old daughter. His suspected killer, identified as Angelo Jose Saldivar of San Bernardino, is in stable condition.
Fellow Sheriff Shannon Dicus spoke on the tragic incident at a news conference on Monday afternoon. “We’re embedded in sorrow. Unfortunately for our department, this has happened way too often,” he said. “We’re going to do our very best to do the most important thing at this point, and that’s to make sure that we bring the suspect to justice and take good care of that family.”
The San Bernardino County District Attorney, Jason Anderson, stated they intend to file charges before the business week ends. They are considering multiple charges, including the murder of a police officer and domestic violence. However, the incident that occurred is likely to evolve the further they investigate, so Anderson believes charges are likely to change as more information is reviewed.
The Community Expresses Condolences
The sheriff’s office is interviewing Saldiva about the death of Deputy Nunez, with more details to follow. The department also released a statement honoring Nunez’s bravery and service to the state of California. “Deputy Nunez served with unwavering commitment, courage, and deep compassion for the community he vowed to protect,” the department stated. “His bravery and sacrifice reflect a life dedicated to safeguarding others, even at the greatest cost. Such devotion will remain forever etched in our hearts.”
Multiple other elected officials and first responders express their grief over the tragic death of Nunez. They expressed their condolences to his pregnant wife and his baby girl. “My prayers are with his wife, young daughter, and family,” said Assemblymember Tom Lackey (R-Palmdale) in a statement. “His courage and dedication to protecting others will never be forgotten.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered the State Capitol to fly flags at half-staff in honor of Nunez and to acknowledge the loss of a brave officer. “His courage, compassion, and dedication to protecting others reflect the finest traditions of law enforcement,” Newsom said in a statement. A memorial procession was also held Monday evening following the tragedy, where law enforcement personnel saluted Nunez’s body as it was carried out of the hospital.
