Chad Powers, Glen Powell, Hulu

Glen Powell’s latest endeavor, Chad Powers, took the world by storm. For six weeks, everyone was tuning into Hulu to catch the latest episode of the series based on an Eli Manning comedy skit. People widely enjoyed it, and it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger without a lot of resolution. Naturally, because of the ending and the enjoyment of the show, many wondered if a second season was coming. When the first season concluded, there was no answer. Now, there is.

It’s official, Hulu can’t ignore the hype. Chad Powers was a hit, and while the showrunners and writers seemed intent on there being more than just the first season, Hulu had the final say, and they’ve decided that there will be another season. Hulu hasn’t made an official announcement itself, but the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that a second season is coming thanks to information provided to a local crew union.

Season 1 ended on a massive cliffhanger (Spoilers ahead) after it was revealed to coach Ricky Hudson that Chad Powers is actually Russ Holliday in a mask, and that he slept with the head coach’s wife and caused the head coach, Jake Hudson, to have a heart attack. But given how much trouble everyone would get in, Ricky cannot reveal Powers as Holliday.

As for why it stopped where it did, this is what co-creator Michael Waldron envisioned. He knows you can only stretch this wild, impossible premise so far, so in order to make it effective, he had to keep it brief. So splitting the storyline in half was the only logical thing for one season. And because Powell is so busy, filming it all and making one longer miniseries wasn’t feasible.

“This is the real answer: It stopped where I would have wanted to stop it. As much as I love these characters, you can’t do 150 episodes of this premise. Powers will run out of eligibility. So the idea was always to go to about the midpoint of the football season. And yes, Glen’s a busy guy, but six episodes felt right to me. ‘Loki’ was six episodes. That was technically an hour long, but episodes are longer [than the typical 22-minutes for a sitcom],” Waldron said via The Hollywood Reporter.

Waldron also said at the time, “We’ve certainly talked about it — talked about a plan. [Hulu] has a sense of where we’d like to take it. Ultimately, we have to see how the show performs, but everybody knows Glen and I want to see this thing through to the end.” Now, it looks like he and Powell will be able to do just that.

A second season may not be all, though. Waldron referred to this as a trilogy, and he expects to keep it going after this upcoming season if the second one is as well-received as the first. ““There’s a lot more story left to tell, so I hope we get to do it. When you get to the end of the first season, it feels like we’re just getting started. Ricky is now pulled into this alliance and now we can get into our Empire Strikes Back chapter of this trilogy. I hope we get to to keep it going,” he said via Men’s Journal.

That will take some time, though. Powell is quite busy, as he’s seemingly taking on the Tom Cruise mantle as the next true movie star thanks to wild action sequences, endless charisma, and a megawatt smile. But that comes at a cost, and it will be hard for Powell to commit enough time over the next few years to film the seasons in between his movies, so don’t expect a quick turnaround.

Conclusion

Chad Powers Season 2 is officially on the way, as the streaming platform Hulu is set to renew the series. After a cliffhanger, this is good news for fans of the show, but it’s also good for those who want some fun football television. It’s not groundbreaking by any means, but it does manage to make football look athletic, which is not something all shows and movies have done before. One of last month’s better watches, we’re excited to see where this show goes.
