Daboll

In a move that surprised no one, the New York Giants today announced they have fired head coach Brian Daboll. This decision followed the team’s latest collapse, surrendering another fourth-quarter double-digit lead in their 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. It was the second time this season the Giants let a double-digit lead slip away with under four minutes left in the game, tying an NFL record set by the 2004 Seattle Seahawks.

The 2-8 Giants have a 20-40-1 record under Daboll in just under four seasons. Assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was named the team’s interim coach. Kafka has been a finalist for several NFL head coaching positions the past couple of years. Joe Schoen remains the general manager, and he has been tasked with finding Daboll’s replacement.

Announcement and Daboll’s Tenure in New York

Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch issued a statement regarding Mr. Daboll’s departure and Mr. Schoen’s ongoing search for a new head coach.

“The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise. We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product. We feel like Joe has assembled a good young nucleus of talent, and we look forward to its development. Unfortunately, the results over the past three years have not been what any of us want. We take full responsibility for those results and look forward to the kind of success our fans expect.”

Mr. Daboll commenced his tenure with the Giants by leading the team to an unexpected 9-7 record and a playoff win over the Minnesota Vikings in 2022. For his achievements that season, he was named the NFL Coach of the Year. However, subsequent seasons have included a decline in team performance and internal organizational difficulties involving Mr. Daboll.

These include a contentious departure from defensive coordinator Wink Martindale following the 2023 campaign, a fine for being in close proximity to the medical tent while quarterback Jaxson Dart was inside, and concerns about communication issues with coaching headsets during games.

Search for New Coach and Remainder of Season

Several individuals have been identified as potential candidates to succeed Mr. Daboll. These candidates include Washington Commanders offensive coordinator and former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Canpanile, and Jeff Hafley, defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.

Rounding out the top group of candidates are Joe Brady, Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, offensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks, and San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. Veteran coaches Mike McCarthy and Jon Gruden’s names have also been mentioned as well as Kafka’s.

For now, Kafka and Schoen will try to restore some respectability to the franchise, which has been so lacking over the past three seasons. And they await the news on rookie franchise quarterback Dart, who suffered a concussion in the third quarter of the game against the Bears. His prolonged absence would be another dagger into the soul of this team.
