With mere months to go before The Super Mario Galaxy Movie officially hits theaters, we officially have the first trailer. When the movie was announced at the September Nintendo Direct, there was a brief teaser that pretty much showed nothing but a small glimpse at Peach’s Castle and the stars above it, referencing the galaxy part of the movie. Now, we know a whole lot more about what’s to come.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer Confirms Plot Details

In April, theaters will likely once again be set ablaze by a Mario movie. The original made $1.36 billion in 2023, and we can expect The Super Mario Galaxy Movie to hit near that mark as well. It almost doesn’t matter what the plot is, but now that the trailer is out, we have a good idea of what’s to come.
The first half of the trailer showcases the new relationship between Mario, Luigi, and the shrunken Bowser. Bowser, still in captivity after his actions in the first film, paints a painting of him and Peach, as he’s still clearly not over her. Luigi likes the art, but Mario doesn’t, still upset with Bowser, who then gets angry about it. But it does seem that Bowser is at least attempting (or pretending) to rehabilitate himself.
It may not matter, though, because Bowser Jr., voiced by Benny Safdie, who legitimately sounded like Jack Black with a voice changer, is out to free his father, and he’ll stop anyone in his way. That includes Princess Peach and Princess Rosalina, a newcomer to the party who is voiced by Brie Larson.
Plenty of references to the game, namely the star portals, show up in the trailer. It’s not yet clear why Rosalina is involved or why Peach and Toad have to go into space in the first place. It’s also unclear how Mario and Luigi fit into that narrative since they’re not necessarily the ones keeping Bowser alone. It’s also unclear how Yoshi, who was teased in the last movie and is going to be in this one, fits into The Super Mario Galaxy Movie yet.
However, based on those details, we can make a few assumptions about where the story will take us. It seems as if Bowser Jr. is going to break his father out and grow him back to normal size, and they may have to flee to outer space to escape. Peach, Toad, Mario, and Luigi may follow suit. Bowser is shown in the trailer attempting to kidnap Rosalina, so it looks like his thing for princesses is not exclusive to Peach.
As with the first movie, there seems to be some more subversion of the typical roles. Peach was not the damsel in distress in the first movie, and she remains highly capable of fighting off enemies in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer. Additionally, Rosalina seems to have very little trouble fighting off Bowser’s robot when they face off, so she is also a capable person who doesn’t necessarily need (at least not as far as we can tell) Mario and Luigi to save her.
Conclusion
Hitting theaters in April, 2026, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is sure to be a hit with audiences. There’s clearly a lot of love and care that goes into these movies from Nintendo and Illumination, as they want to make fans happy. They are poised to do so yet again, and it is highly likely that the 2026 box office will be totally dominated by this film just like the original. We can’t wait to see how things turn out and what’s next for this budding film franchise.
