The NFL’s MVP award is among the most anticipated trophies handed out each season. We’ve had a plethora of seasons where it’s been the best player on the best team. Then some seasons where it’s the player who had the best season. However, for the previous 12 seasons, it’s been a quarterback award. This has been a season we get once every few years, when there isn’t a clear-cut favorite for MVP. Let’s dive into my top three candidates for the award.
Honorable Mention: San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffery
Christian McCaffery is the engine for the 49ers, who are exceeding expectations. Despite the injuries they’ve suffered, both offensively and defensively, they have a 10-4 record and are currently the 6th seed in the NFC. Does he have jaw-dropping numbers? No. Just a normal CMC year. When he’s healthy, he’s one of the best players in the NFL. He currently has 1,742 scrimmage yards (922 rushing & 829 receiving), 14 touchdowns, & 86 catches, which leads the team. As a running back, leading the team in receptions and receiving yards is a fantastic achievement.
#3: Last Season’s MVP Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen
Despite not playing up to his MVP form last season, Josh Allen is third on my ballot, if I had one. He has had ups and downs all season long, but he is on a heater at the right time to swing the voters. Allen has 3,276 passing yards, 25 passing TDs (4th), 10 INTs, and 12 rushing TDs. The Bills are coming off a nice win against the Patriots and sit in second place in the AFC East with a record of 10-4. It’s tricky because this season has been a two-person race for most of it, but Allen is a strong candidate for third.
#2: Future MVP New England Patriots’ QB Drake Maye
The leap Drake Maye has had from year one to year two has been an assurgence that very few have had. Drake Maye has been one of the best players in the NFL this season, leading the Patriots to an 11-3 record and sitting atop the AFC East. Also, he has had an excellent statistical season. Maye ranked 5th in the NFL in passing yards (3,567), 5th in passing TDs (23), 7 INTs (15th), & four rushing TDs. He has been one of the most consistent QBs in the league. He will be an MVP in this league in the future.
#1: Future 2025 MVP Los Angeles Rams’ QB Matthew Stafford
The NFL’s 2025 MVP will be Matthew Stafford. He has been the best and most consistent quarterback in the NFL this season. He has everything from the eye test to team and individual success. Stafford has led the Rams to an 11-3 record, first place in the NFC West, and the NFC’s top seed. He sits 2nd in passing yards (3,722), 1st in passing TDs (37), and 5 INTs. An MVP award is the last thing missing from his illustrious career. He’s also in a great position to win his second Lombardi trophy this season.
Final Thoughts
The 2025 MVP race has been one of the closest races in recent memory. The last time a race was this close, as far as I can remember, was back in 2018, when it was Patrick Mahomes against Drew Brees. I am excited to see how the rest of the season unfolds.
