North Carolina has several new laws going into effect as of 2026. Some were highly contested, while others were nearly unanimous with support. From cell phones to genders, these are part of a stricter movement that Rep. Mike Schietzelt believes will have a positive impact in schools statewide. Healthcare reforms also went into effect today in NC.
Law Restricts Cellphones and Impacts Social Media
Governor Josh Stein signed House Bill 959 into law on Tuesday, requiring school boards to regulate students’ access to and use of wireless communication devices. This includes more than just cellphones, too. Tablets, laptops, gaming devices, and more are all covered by the new bill. NC is one of many states trying to reduce cell phone use in schools.
NC Only Recognizes Two Genders
As we head into 2026, North Carolina only recognizes two genders- male and female. This is based on a person’s biological sex at birth, according to the new law. State officials claim that this is to reduce and eventually stop transgender people from being able to change their gender on official state documents. This is covered under House Bill 805, which creates rigid definitions of sex and gender.
Laws Impact Healthcare and More
Two major changes to health care rules went live today as well. Senate Bill 479 affects patients’ access to pharmaceuticals. House Bill 67 affects people who work in the health care industry. Several sections of House Bill 67 claim to make it easier for North Carolina hospitals and clinics to hire doctors trained abroad. The other change concerns reducing dust and smoke during procedures.
