fire, Vondelkerk, Amsterdam

As the first hour of 2026 neared, a fire broke out in Amsterdam, consuming the Vondelkerk church. The Neo-Gothic church was destroyed by flames that officials say started around 12:45 am, with flames that were visible throughout the central city area. The New Year brought tragedy as flames ripped through the historical structure, dating back to the early 1800s.

Fire Brings Destruction For New Years

Shortly before 1 a.m. on Jan 1, 2026, the Vondelkerk church was engulfed in flames. The flames were seen shooting up one of the church’s towers, spiraling so high that those out celebrating could see the blaze from around the city. Several dozen homes were evacuated due to the high risk of the fire spreading. Some residents living particularly close to the church will be unable to return home until after the cleanup is complete.

The fire burned well into the wee hours of New Year’s Day and was not declared under control until after 11 a.m. Authorities believe fireworks caused the fire, and an official investigation will not start until tomorrow. Mayor Halsema wrote:

“For many local residents, the church was a landmark, a quiet companion as they grew up, lived, and grew older in the neighborhood. Everyone who visited was captivated by the acoustics and the special atmosphere. And so, many generations of Amsterdammers cherish fond memories of the church building.”

Amsterdam Owner Hopes To Rebuild

Stadsherstel Amsterdam owns the church, and after going over drone footage and the damage from the fire, is hopeful for the structure’s future. While some countries are building over historical gardens, Director Onno Meerstadt is focusing on bringing the church back to its “former glory“. The company Stradsherstel specializes in restoring historic buildings, and has the architect’s drawings of the church.

Meerstadt stated that he hopes to have the church restored within months, and that it is ” appalling to see the church severely damaged. But the walls are still strong.” He also went on to talk about how he would still need to speak with the insurance company and the finances for restoring the building.

Not Impossible

Even though this has been quite a tragedy, it is not impossible to conceive that the church is salvageable. Think about the Notre Dame Cathedral, which reopened after extensive damage from a massive fire. Thankfully, there are no reported casualties from the fire at this time. Unfortunately, not all fires end with that result. Additionally, this church has survived another blaze in 1904.

At this time, there are no leads on whether a fundraising event will be held to help restore the church. Amsterdam locals highly value the building, and the Netherlands is known for its restoration and preservation of history. Keep an eye out for more updates on the Vondelkerk.
