Myles Garrett is the new NFL single-season sack king! He broke a record that had stood tall for 25 years and was tied back in 2021. This is one of the more impressive feats any player could ever achieve. This is an excellent moment for him and the Cleveland Browns organization.
Garrett Breaks Record
The Browns’ defensive end Myles Garrett has broken a record that many thought would never be touched again. After TJ Watt tied Michael Strahan’s 22.5-sack record in 2021, I expected players to get close but not eclipse it. I was wrong. He has been the franchise’s shining star since being drafted number one in 2017. His pure dominance and consistent play won him Defensive Player of the Year honors after the 2023 season.
His future in Cleveland was shaky when he requested a trade back in February. Garrett would sign a contract extension worth $160 million over the next four seasons. As football fans, we love seeing all-time great players achieve such heights. With so much movement in today’s NFL, watching these players dominate with the team that drafted them makes this record more meaningful.
Historical Importance
His 125.5 Career sacks rank him tied with Hall of Famer Dwight Freeney for 28th all-time. This record puts him in the same class as one of the best defensive players of all time. After the dominant season he has had this year, he is poised to win his second DPOY award. That would make him the ninth player to win the award multiple times.
Final Thoughts
This has been a valuable metric to monitor as the season has progressed. Garrett has been a game wrecker despite the team’s lack of success. When you are the opposing team’s number one priority and still dominate, that separates you from the rest of the field. Will we see another 20+ sack season? If so, who will it be?
As always, thank you so much for checking out my thoughts and what it means historically that Myles Garrett broke the single-season sack record! Be sure to check out our other amazing content here at New Leaf News! We hope you’re enjoying your day and look forward to seeing you again soon.
