detroit pistons, cade Cunningham

I tend to write a lot of nostalgic articles, and this seems like another one. I feel like I woke up and it’s the mid-2000s again! George Blaha is still calling the games, Mason is still yelling “Deeeeeetroit Basketballllllll,” and most importantly, the Detroit Pistons are back on top of the Eastern Conference!

The Stones ended their five-year playoff drought last season and got their first playoff win in sixteen years! Well, the hunger for more is real! Behind superstar Cade Cunningham, they are sitting pretty on top of the East and have the second-best record in the NBA. The question becomes, are they serious championship contenders?

Will Cade and the Pistons Represent the Eastern Conference?

The last time Detroit was the number one seed in the Eastern Conference was 2007. They lost to the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers in the conference finals. As much as that seems like a lifetime ago, so does three years ago when they had their historical 28-game losing streak!

J.B. Bickerstaff has turned the team around since taking over for the high-profiled Monty Williams in July of 2024. Now, Cade Cunningham has blossomed into one of the top superstars in the Association. Cade and company come to play in every game, and the Pistons are 27-9 early in the new year.

The supporting cast of Jalen Duran, Duncan Robinson, and Tobias Harris is providing plenty of assistance for their young superstar. The firm defensive presence of “Beef Stew” Isaiah Stewart and Ausar Thompson has fans reminiscing of some “Bad Boys” and “Going to Work” rosters from years past.

Do they have a chance to represent the Eastern Conference this year? I think so. In a year when the Boston Celtics are missing their superstar, the 76ers have issues, and they easily handled the Knicks the other night, the Pistons have a legit shot. The conference is wide open and could favor a team that shows up every night!

Can the Pistons Win a Championship?

Although I think Detroit will represent the East in the NBA Championship, unlike Stephen A. Smith, I don’t think the Pistons will win it all this year. I understand there is a chance if you get there, but beating one of the two teams I think will represent the West is a whole other beast.

As I mentioned, the Eastern Conference may be wide open, and Detroit may have the best opportunity to come out of the gauntlet. I think the West comes down to two elite teams above the rest. Those two teams would be the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs.

I believe the Thunder are in the beginning stages of the next great NBA dynasty. The young core of SGA and Chet Holmgren are coming off their first NBA Championships in franchise history, and I think there are a few more in their future. They have carried their championship momentum so far this season with the NBA’s best record.

The Spurs, led by the freak of nature Victor Wembanyama, are a serious championship contender. Not only does Wemby look like an NBA2K create-a-character, but he also racks up stats like one, too. He could be the Thunder’s kryptonite and can be a serious threat to take over the throne.

Final Thoughts

In Detroit, we got our baseball team back a couple of years ago, and now we are feeling the vibe of the Pistons’ success. The sports city thrives off its teams, and it’s been way too long since the Stones have been relevant. Cade Cunningham has revived the heartbeat of this franchise, but I think they are one more superstar away from competing with the best of the West. We will see what they do at the deadline and look forward to their playoff run!
