There have been four Fallout games and one spin-off, with the latter two (and the spin-off) being big, open-world action RPGs. 3 opened things up, but many consider New Vegas and 4 to be the pinnacle of the franchise. With renewed interest thanks to the Amazon show, people have taken to playing the last mainline game, 4.
It’s on Game Pass, and an anniversary edition was just released, making it pretty accessible and modern. The other two are a little harder to come by, and they’re not nearly as updated for today’s gaming standards. At least, they’re not yet.
Fallout 3, New Vegas Pegged for Remaster

Leaks have come fast and furious as it pertains to the future of the Fallout series. We know a fifth game is in the works, and we know it will be conscious of the events of the television show starring Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins.
We don’t know when that’s coming, but we do know that a Fallout 3 remaster is on the way. There’s a countdown to something on the television show’s website, but industry insider Jez Corden said, “Some have been wondering if a mysterious countdown on the Fallout TV show’s Amazon Prime website is hinting at a shadow drop for a new Fallout game or remaster. I’m told this is not the case. However, we are eventually getting a Fallout 3 remake in the vein of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, as well as Fallout New Vegas on top.”
Bethesda boss Todd Howard has consistently said that the developers are doing the most in this series right now, meaning that it is much more prevalent than The Elder Scrolls, DOOM, or Starfield. With how important Elder Scrolls VI is and how the anticipation has built for that, this is a significant statement from Howard.
He has also said that Fallout is being invested in greatly right now. It may take some time to see the fruits of that investment, but the series is going to be back and perhaps bigger than ever sometime in the future. That includes the two remakes and a fifth mainline game.
The TV show, which is easily one of the best things on streaming right now, is probably going to have to do the heavy lifting in the interim. Games take a while to do, even remasters, and with no official announcements, it’s probably a while off in the future.
But Season 2 is already out, less than two years after Season 1, and Amazon has stated that they want to speed up the wait times even more by filming sooner, so subsequent seasons could have less of a wait in between. That should leave enough content for fans to get by until the remasters (likely first) and the new game come out.
These remakes would essentially ensure all three open-world games in this series are available to everyone and can be played on modern consoles. Right now, 3 and New Vegas are available, but they’re definitely not optimized for an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 like 4 is. Older controls and graphics can feel clunky, so a polish and even some added missions or changes to the game will be more than welcome.
Conclusion
As always, it’s a great time to be a fan of Fallout. If you’re a particular fan of the game series and are itching for something new, then rest assured, new content is coming. Two remakes of the other two open-world titles are reportedly in the works, as is a fifth game. Patience will be key, but you’ll have your reward eventually!
