The Houston Texans are leading at halftime of a cold-weather, low-scoring NFL Playoff game. Their smothering defense has made up for the two fumbles CJ Stroud lost. With the second half pending, the winner head to New England to take on the Patriots, and the loser goes home. Let’s dive into the first half.
Defense Dominates Both Sides
As in our preview, this game has been low-scoring. Both defensive lines have feasted. The Texans tried a trick play in the first quarter where Jack Sawyer could force a fumble, and Yahya Black would recover. That was the first fumble Stroud has lost all season long. Pittsburgh wasn’t able to take advantage.
They were, however, able to take advantage of a bad snap that Stroud picked up and tried to make a play with. He, Keeanu Benton, forced a second fumble, and TJ Watt recovered it. Pittsburgh’s offense would pick up a first down, then was forced to kick Chris Boswell’s second Field Goal of the night.
Second Half Adjustments
Pittsburgh needs to get back to the perimeter. DK Metcalf had two catches for 42 yards in their first two drives. He did drop a pass, but you must go back to your beast. Remember, sometimes in the playoffs, call players, not plays. The Texans better protect the ball and Stroud. He’s only been sacked twice, but both of them resulted in turnovers.
First Half Thoughts
Both teams have shown that their defense’s are the leaders of their respective teams. Who do you see pulling this game out in the second half? Can Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers mount a second-half comeback, or will the Texans and Stroud hold the lead?
