Michael David McKee, the ex-husband of a woman slain in her Ohio home, was charged over the weekend for the murders of her and her current husband. On Monday, January 12, 2026, McKee waived his right to an extradition hearing in Illinois.
Arrested for Ex-Wife’s Murder
The 39-year-old doctor from Chicago was charged with premeditated aggravated murder in the fatal shootings of 39-year-old Monique Tepe, his ex-wife, and her 37-year-old husband, Dr. Spencer Tepe. McKee and Monique were briefly married from 2015 until 2017, after Monique was granted a divorce on grounds of incompatibility. The Tepes were found killed in their Columbus home on December 30, 2025, while their two young children cried out in a separate room.
McKee was arrested Saturday, January 10, and is currently jailed in Winnebago County, Illinois. He appeared emotionless in court on Monday as he entered the courtroom in a yellow jumpsuit with shackles around his wrists. Judge Donald Shriver initially scheduled a hearing for January 19 to confirm when he will be transferred to Ohio to face the consequences of his actions, but court records show that it will not be possible to extradite him by that date.
According to Tom Jakeway, trial court administrator for the 17th Judicial Circuit Court of Illinois, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is in communication with Franklin County officials to coordinate McKee’s return and the trial’s location.
Family Torn Apart
After weeks of speculation and confusion surrounding the murders, McKee’s arrest provides a certain type of clarity. There were no obvious signs of forced entry on the Tepe’s home, and police said there was no weapon to indicate it was a murder-suicide. Additionally, nothing was stolen, and the remaining household members – two young children and the family dog – were left unharmed.
In a statement following McKee’s arrest, Tepe’s family said it was “an important step toward justice,” and they trust the justice system will hold him accountable if he is the perpetrator. “Monique and Spencer remain at the center of our hearts, and we carry forward their love as we surround and protect the two children they leave behind,” the statement read. “We will continue to honor their lives and the light they brought into this world.”
McKee Faces Lawsuit in Nevada
Records received indicate that the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners issued McKee a medical license on March 6, 2023, which expired on June 30, 2025. He practiced at Las Vegas Surgical Associates, which was involved in a medical malpractice lawsuit, and McKee is named in the complaint.
According to the complaint, patient Guilherme Schwanz was looking for treatment related to lower extremity venous insufficiency and states he went through laser treatment on July 5, 2023. The procedure was performed by Andrea Eghterafi, who was allegedly under McKee and another doctor’s supervision.
Schwanz alleges McKee and the other doctor failed to properly train or supervise the participating party who caused a “catheter or device to shear or fracture, leaving an 8.6-inch portion of the device in the Plaintiff’s body.” Schwanz was taken in an ambulance to an acute care hospital for emergency surgery.
Eghterafi’s attorneys deny the allegation and claim McKee was on-site but not her registered supervising physician at the time of the incident. A process server for the courts attempted multiple times to serve McKee, but there was obvious avoidance and other difficulties. A judge granted an order to serve by publication, and at this time, it is unknown “who, if anyone, will represent Dr. McKee.” The medical malpractice lawsuit is scheduled for a status check on trial readiness on April 28, 2027.
