On Jan. 13, in Asia, South Korea and Japan leaders met at the Nara Summit to strengthen their bond by cooperating for security and economic stability. Due to China’s current leader, Xi Jinping, seeking to obtain Taiwan and the tech competition against the United States, it negatively affected supply chains.
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung did not come empty-handed, for he gifted a drum set to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Excitement surged through her and invited her colleague for a music lesson. Within days, the Nara Summit is considered a success for positive reinforcement. Myung’s and Takaichi’s drumming session also offered the world a moment of peace from the stressful tension.
What was discussed at the Nara Summit?
Previously, Jae-myung met and discussed with Jinping in Beijing on Jan. 4. His four-day visit consisted of attempting to reunite China and South Korea’s relations and improve economic opportunities. The matters included lifting the 2016 South Korean import ban, relieving their ongoing maritime disputes, and their alliance with North Korea.
Myung faced reality head-on as China sanctioned Japan earlier in Dec. 2025. The nation also accused former top Self-Defense Force Officer, Iwasaki Shigeru, of international interference. The Japanese military official later moved to Taiwan and currently acts as one of Taiwan’s Executive Cabinet advisors. Takaichi did threaten to take military action against China if they attempt to invade. Unfortunately for South Korea, the South Korea-China Summit did not see any progress.
At the Nara Summit, observers and reporters witnessed a more positive outcome. Takaichi and her committee gave a warm welcome to Jae-myung. After discussing the issues about China and plans to strengthen Japan’s alliance with South Korea, both leaders agree that their nations shall cooperate, starting with aiding their supply chains. These countries are part of the 30% who relied on China’s manufacturing because they can sell necessary materials for cheaper prices.
Jae-myung is aware that South Korea’s citizens are still sensitive to Japan. Protestors are wary about Japan’s colonialism during the First and Second World Wars. It scarred the nation over time because many suffered from forced assimilation and slavery. Takaichi and Jae-myung addressed the resentment at the Nara Summit, saying they will collaborate to make amends while focusing on trade and security.

While awaiting to be Japan’s first woman national leader, interviewers wondered how Takaichi would handle stress. She responded passionately that it’s playing the drums.
The National Diet icon trained during universtity and performed instrument covers to heavy metal song, naming Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden as two of her favorite bands. As a sign of good faith, Jae-myung paired the drum set with tailored drumsticks. She took the opportunity to perform a duet during the Nara Summit.

Takaichi played two of the nation’s popular hits: BTS’s “Dynamite” and KPop Demon Hunters’s “Golden.” The Japanese prime minister was impressed to see him learn the basics in 10 minutes. To Jae-myung, drumming was on his to-do bucket list. He told the press, “I fulfilled a lifelong dream today. Ever since I was young, I wished to play drums.”
