Over the past decade, the Fayetteville, North Carolina native has proven himself not just as a lyrical storyteller but as a poet whose work resonates with both critics and fans alike.
All while creating back-to-back hits with Drake and mentoring new talent under his record label, Dreamville Records. Alas, after a quiet period following his celebrated 2021 album The Off-Season and the 2024 mixtape Might Delete Later, Cole has recently teased a new track from his next album, The Fall Off. The wait is over.
“Disc 2 Track 2”: A Reverse Life Story
The Fall-Off is set for release on February 6, 2026. This announcement marked the end of nearly a decade of speculation and hype, as fans had been hearing mentions of The Fall-Off since as far back as 2018. Beginning with the final track “1985 (Intro to The Fall Off)” on his KOD album.
But J.Cole knows his fans have been waiting a long time, so an album announcement alone wouldn’t be enough to satisfy their earbuds. Shortly after revealing the release date, fans were blessed with the first preview of the album: a brand-new single titled Disc 2 Track 2. The song unfolds in reverse, a creative choice that mirrors the idea of looking back over Cole’s life and career, and trying to make sense of it.
In lyrical form, Cole literally walks listeners backward through the events of his life and home, from hypothetical death and legacy back to the day he was born. It’s a style that not only showcases his sharp storytelling but also his emotional range and philosophical depth in regard to pondering about his life. It’s fitting and relatable as we all tend to do the same (maybe not with the same amount of talent). Wondering what went wrong, cringing at mistakes, and feeling grateful that things worked out.
The accompanying music video reinforces this reverse storytelling, with visuals that actually move backward through different scenes and settings, each underlining the reflective nature of the lyrics.
