The age of video game adaptations is definitely upon us. Comic book movies were all the rage for over a decade, but those seem to be dwindling, and the interest is absolutely fading. Gaming movies and television shows have slowly but surely taken their place, with Sonic the Hedgehog, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Fallout, The Last of Us, and more leading the way and breaking an age-old curse.
It used to be that video game adaptations were just plain awful. The old Resident Evil movies, the original Mario adaptation, the Monster Hunter adaptations, and so many others were so poorly done. Now, there’s real care and effort put in, and most video game adaptations end up good. Here are some incoming ones you should know about.
Video Game Adaptations to Put on the Radar

The world is better when good video game adaptations are out. Right now, Fallout is having another excellent season. The Last of Us is primed for its third season, and a fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie is coming next year. So is the first, presumably of many, The Legend of Zelda movies. In a couple of months, a new Mario movie will be out.
But there are some you probably didn’t know about. Video game movies include:
- Return to Silent Hill (January 26, 2026)
- The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April 3, 2026)
- Mortal Kombat 2 (May 15, 2026)
- Resident Evil (September 18, 2026)
- Street Fighter (October 16, 2026)
- The Angry Birds Movie 3 (January 29, 2027)
- Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (March 19, 2027)
- The Legend of Zelda (May 7, 2027)
- A Minecraft Movie 2 (July 23, 2027)
That’s not all. There are even more announced that have yet to get into production or are not yet on the calendar, including:
- Five Nights at Freddy’s 3
- Elden Ring
- Call of Duty
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
- Ghost of Tsushima
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Grow a Garden from Roblox
- Helldivers 2
- The Sims
- Martha Is Dead
- Riders Republic
- Gears of War
- Sleeping Dogs
- Phasmophobia
- Death Stranding
- Death Stranding: Mosquito
- Days Gone
- Dredge
- Pokémon: Detective Pikachu 2
- Stray
- BioShock
- El Paso, Elsewhere
- Split Fiction
- Space Channel 5
- Comix Zone
- Watch Dogs
Once again, that’s not all. Those were just the movies. In the TV space, so much more is on the way. Devil May Cry Season 2 is coming in 2026. The Last of Us Season 3 is slated for 2027. Ghost of Tsushima‘s anime is, too. Beyond that, these are announced:
- The Witcher: Season 5
- God of War
- Far Cry
- Mass Effect
- Live-Action Tomb Raider
- Beyond: Two Souls
- Gears of War
- Assassin’s Creed
- Splinter Cell: Deathwatch
- Overcooked Reality TV Show
If you have ever even picked up a video game controller, there’s a good chance you’ve played a game that is being adapted or has already been in the last few years. Gaming has arguably reached a fever pitch with so many good releases all the time, and that is spilling well over into the film and television world.
These adaptations aren’t just for gamers, though. Fallout does a brilliant job of making the show wholly accessible for non-players. The Last of Us, at least the first season, was a prestige HBO drama. The Super Mario Bros. Movie made $1.36 billion, and that wasn’t just video game players.
Conclusion
The video game adaptation is in its heyday. Eventually, the bubble will burst, and they will go away. For now, though, it’s a fantastic time to be a gamer and a fan of movies or television. The line between the two forms of media is blurring, and we’re all the better for it.
