UConn Lady Huskies’ sophomore superstar, Sarah Strong, joins a strong legacy of dominating women’s basketball stars. This is in addition to Rebecca Lobo, Nykesha Sales, Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi, and, most recently, Paige Bueckers.
All of those who have carried the torch for Huskies basketball! They also have the NCAA Championship in the “Home of the Basketball Capital of the World”, which a sign I pass on my way back home from Massachusetts says. It is on the Welcome to Connecticut sign, and in Connecticut, basketball is our religion.
Fresh-Faced…
Sarah Strong, a 6’2″ forward, was a two-time North Carolina Miss Basketball (2023 and 2024) committed to UConn after a storied high school hoops career. She was the Naismith Prep Player of the Year and McDonald’s All-American Game co-MVP in 2024. As a high school senior, she averaged 21 points, 16.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, making her the top-ranked recruit of the class of 2024, according to ESPN.
Strong made an impact in her first game as a Husky, scoring a team-high 17 points, four rebounds, three assists, and six steals, in an 86-32 beatdown over Boston College. She would be named Big East Freshman of the Year, named to the All-Big East First Team, Big East All-Freshman Team, and the winner of the WBCA Freshman of the Year award.
Strong was also a key contributor in the national championship game, recording a double-double with 24 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists in UConn’s 82-59 victory over South Carolina. She finished her freshman campaign with averages of 16.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per contest.
Sophomore Sensation…
In just her second season in Storrs, CT, she has become a driving force for the Huskies and their bid to repeat as NCAA Women’s champions. We saw signs of the player that she’d become as a freshman on Paige Bueckers‘ championship-winning Huskies squad. But now, with Bueckers gone, it is Strong’s team… mostly.
When Bueckers left for the bright lights of the WNBA, it was expected that senior guard Azzi Fudd would be UConn’s top dog, but Strong took the leash and ran with it. With the duo of Strong and Fudd leading UConn, the Huskies are undefeated (17-0) this season, winning by an average of 44 points per game at home.
1,000 and Beyond…
On January 19, Strong scored 18 points in a Big East matchup against Notre Dame, becoming the third-fastest Husky (behind Bueckers and Moore, in 55 games) to reach 1,000 points, doing so in 59 games. She accomplished this despite averaging less than 30 minutes per game this season. She would score points 999, 1,000, and 1,001 on a three-pointer with 7:30 left in the second period, earning legendary status.
While we are only halfway through the college basketball season, there is still a lot of Husky hoops to be played. If Strong continues to play like a basketball cheat code, UConn will be raising another banner into the rafters of Gampel Pavilion… maybe more. I have no doubt that her best years are yet to come, and I am excited to be along for the ride.
Strong Legacy…
Strong has consistently shown the world what UConn head coach Geno Auriemma knew all along… She is a versatile perimeter scorer with exceptional ball-handling and passing ability. Her basketball talent brought her to Storrs, but her winning attitude and dedication quickly made her a fan favorite to Husky Nation.
Having lived in Connecticut, specifically the Storrs-Mansfield area, for 40 years of my life, I can attest that the UConn faithful are among the most difficult fan bases to win over… They love their women’s basketball here. And they love Miss Strong. When it is all said and done, Strong could wind up being the greatest Husky of all time.
