After decades of dominance in College Football, the SEC may have been officially dethroned as the best in the country. You may ask who the successor to the “big boy” chair is. Well, to no one’s surprise, it’s the B1G. If people aren’t familiar with the unique logo, we are now crowning the Big 10 (or should I say the Big 18) as the most superior conference in the country! The once-Midwest-based conference has produced the last three National Champions, officially telling the SEC to step aside because “We got this!”
Has the B1G Taken Over College Football?
The answer is complicated, but for now, yes, yes, it has. We are now in the era of a College Football Playoff, NIL, and the transfer portal. In the history of the CFP, the SEC has won six of the 12 National Championships since its inception in 2014. Although they still have the most as a conference, the B1G is not far behind.
The B1G has now won its third straight Natty and has become the nation’s best conference. Michigan, Ohio State, and, shockingly, Indiana have won the last three championships. After years of the SEC dominating the game, it seems like NIL and the transfer portal have evened things out.
As a B1G viewer, in years past, it has been frustrating to hear “rumors” of SEC players receiving “gifts and benefits” for attending their respective schools. Not saying it didn’t happen up north, but now it’s a level playing field across College Football. With Indiana winning it after being the most losing program in the NCAA, it proves that it can be anyone’s game with the right strategy.
College Football no longer has the problem of recruits only wanting to play in the SEC or ACC for better weather or getting paid under the table. Undesirable locations can now compete as long as their boosters and donations pile in.
B1G’s Reign On Top
The Big 10’s reign at the top may be as short as a leprechaun’s; we just need to wait and see. With more parity in the game than ever before, we will most likely see other stories like the 2025 Indiana Hoosiers in the future. Teams like Vanderbilt are now conference and playoff contenders.
The days of a Nick Saban-run Alabama dynasty may be far and few between. Ask how many contenders Carson Beck is going to play for! In my opinion, the transfer portal is getting out of control, but what do I know? I do think it’s good that teams that seemed to never have a chance in the past have a bright future as long as they are willing to spend.
I mentioned in a previous article that this may not be your father’s College Football anymore, but the parity is a great thing. The game’s recruiting strategy has changed to a nationwide search, and it all comes down to money and playing time. It’s no longer about scholarships because let’s face it, we’re not here to play school.
Final Thoughts
The College Football game has turned into NFL-Lite, which quenches your thirst on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Unless you love some nasty MAC-tion on Tuesday Nights, and if that’s the case, you may have a football addiction. The transfer portal has turned into free agency, but I guess it gives more opportunities to less prestigious schools. I mentioned we were not here to play school. I just hope that when it’s all said and done, these athletes can put sentences together without an education, since they love plugging them into the commentary booth, whether they are entertaining or not.
