Green Day, Super Bowl, Music

With two weeks before Super Bowl 60 (aka Super Bowl LX), Roc Nation makes one final addition to its musician lineup. The punk rock band, Green Day, was announced to perform alongside Charlie Puth, Coco Jones, and Brandi Carlile for the opening show.

For over two decades, the band has shared political views on the US, especially criticizing Donald Trump before his two presidential terms. Green Day fuels the fire for the 2026 NFL event with Puerto Rican reggae artist, Bad Bunny. Despite the backlash, Roc Nation and the chosen artists refused to step down from this season.

Green Day is Honored for Super Bowl 60 Spot

According to The Independent, Green Day fans are expecting them to perform their greatest hits, specifically “American Idiot” and “21 Guns”. These songs portrayed the 21st-century US era after 9/11 occurred in 2003. “American Idiot” represented how an administration can manipulate the nation with the media and cater to suburban disillusionment. “21 Guns” further established these ideals by voicing the need for humanity to seek its peace, even in the midst of disaster and war.

Green Day singer, Billie Joe Armstrong, is ecstatic to be a part of America’s annual football event. “We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard!” he acknowledged the band’s Californian origins. Then, he said, “We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for the fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”

Bad Bunny Stands Tall for Halftime Show

Super Bowl 60’s Halftime Show pick isn’t changing anytime soon. The Trump administration and MAGA have attempted to petition Bad Bunny away from the NFL stage. Roc Nation and NFL Headline Commissioner Roger Goodell have defended their decision for the Puerto Rican reggaeton in the US’s cultural representation.

“[Our choice is] carefully thought through,” Goodell addressed at the 2025 Fall League Meeting. “I’m not sure if we have selected an artist without some blowback or criticism. It’s pretty hard to do when you have hundreds of millions of people that are watching.”

Even when ICE threatened to appear at the event, Bad Bunny kept his head high and a positive attitude. He bravely encouraged naturally-born and immigrant Latin Americans on Saturday Night Live’s Oct. 4th broadcast to be proud of their heritage. Sharing his Super Bowl stage will be the American Sign Language Program, which will be led by deaf Puerto Rican performer Celimar Rivera Cosme.

Brandi Carlile To Perform “America the Beautiful”

Grammy award-winning folk artist Brandi Carlile is another star who brought attention to the Super Bowl 60 performance lineup. For those unaware, the LGBTQ+ icon currently holds resentment against Trump since the 2016 US Presidential Election. She did not agree with his policies and how he uses aggression to chastise against selected ethnicities, sexuality, and religious beliefs. As a lesbian Christian mother and wife, Carlile actively spoke her mind through her actions.

In 2019, she dropped out of Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit that was held in Washington, D.C. It was her way to protest against family separation policies established by former US Homeland Security Secretary Kristjin Nielsen. Later in 2022, Carlile voiced her opinions against the Roe v. Wade overturn due to the majority of justices selected by Trump. “The policies and the people don’t match,” she stated.

And when the Trump administration cut funding for the Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief in spring 2025, she joined pop idol Elton John’s funding campaign. Her most recent single, “Church & State”, is growing to become one of the protest songs of the decade. Carlile is set to perform this year’s “America the Beautiful”.

Only two of the Super Bowl 60 performers have been perceived as having the least negativity. Back in November, Charlie Puth confused sports fans because he’s known for his soft-spoken vocals. Political news influencer Link Lauren criticized the “Attention” singer may not be capable of singing the American National Anthem.

She comments that no one will sing it better than the late vocalist Whitney Houston. He responded, “I’ll never claim to be as good a singer as Whitney Houston ever was. But I assure you we’re putting a special arrangement together – in D major. It’ll be one of my best performances.”

As for rising R&B star Coco Jones, she gained more praise than hate as she will be performing “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. The song was written by the Johnson Brothers in the pre-Civil War era, back when many African Americans were free, educated, and were part of the middle class. Some of her critics are mainly those who support the Confederacy and other racist groups. Sheen Magazine explained that Jones’s Super Bowl 60 performance is vital not only to empower people of color but also to celebrate the start of a new era.
