Video games are on the fast track to Hollywood these days. If a game is successful or popular, someone’s going to try to adapt it at some point. Five Nights at Freddie’s, Sonic the Hedgehog, God of War, Fallout, The Last of Us, Metal Gear, and so many others have proven and are proving this point all the time. Whether movie or TV, games usually get into this art form.
Some video games have been curiously overlooked so far, and others just haven’t been out long enough to warrant the attention needed. Whatever the reason, there are still so many video games that deserve to be brought to a wider audience.
Video Games That Should Be Adapted Soon
5. Super Smash Bros.

It is not at all feasible for the Mario, Zelda, Detective Pikachu, and Sonic franchises to link up at some point and make a Super Smash Bros. movie. It is feasible, however, to make a movie based on the game. It would need to be animated to account for all the different character styles, but it’s possible. If they can make Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter into movies, why can’t they make Nintendo’s amazing fighter game into one?
4. Spyro
Spyro would make a fantastic television series. There are so many video games and adventures that the purple dragon has gone on, so there is so much material for plenty of seasons of TV. Spyro is totally iconic, but few outside the gaming world have even the slightest clue who he is. It’s high time that changed, and a TV show in the style of The Super Mario Bros. Movie would be so appreciated.
3. Grand Theft Auto
I’ve never been the biggest fan of the GTA franchise, but how it has never been adapted is beyond me. It’s probably the most iconic video game series of all time, and there are five (soon to be six) full-length video games with stories ripe for an adaptation. They could even go the Fallout route and just tell a story in the Grand Theft Auto world, and it would be a massive success.
2. Minecraft
Yes, there is a Minecraft movie adaptation, and a sequel is coming. However, it’s not an adaptation of the Minecraft story, which is a missed opportunity. A Minecraft Movie is also just plain bad. So instead, they could adapt the main objective. A character wakes up in an untapped world and must survive by mining, crafting, and collecting items. It would make for a perfect Adventure/Survival genre movie.
1. Red Dead Redemption
The best way to make a Red Dead Redemption adaptation would be in TV show format. There are two massive, sprawling video games that connect to make one overarching story. They’re both stories worth being adapted, especially since they follow one another. So, to give proper time, a two-season show would be great. I’m not sure a TV show or anything could do Red Dead 2 justice, but on the other hand, it would bring Arthur Morgan and John Marston to a wider audience, so let’s take the risk.
Conclusion
Despite there seemingly being countless video game adaptations out and in the works (that list above is but a tiny fraction of what’s been or is being made), there’s always room for more. There are so many great video games that are locked behind a medium that too many people have a stigma against.
Making them into movies or TV shows makes them a little more accessible and can help remove that stigma. When The Last of Us first came out, it showed people what games actually are. We can keep that going and make them all the more popular.
