Josh McDaniels, NFL, New England Patriots

This is it for the AFC. The right to go to the Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos is almost upon us. On one side, an injured top-seeded Broncos team that’s playing at home with a dominant defense. Conversely, an MVP candidate looking to write his name on the shortlist of players to make ‘The Game’ in their second season. Let’s dive into the 2026 AFC Championship!

Patriots’ Keys to Success

The New England Patriots are one win away from the potential of another dynasty brewing. The first key to a Pats win is their quarterback, Drake Maye. In the previous two playoff games, Maye has had a fumbling problem. He’s put the ball on the ground six times. Now his team has only lost three of them; however, how long will they continue to jump on loose balls at a 50% rate? If they lose the turnover margin in this game, that’s the only way they can put themselves in poor positions.

Two words, one name, Will Campbell. You were drafted with the 4th pick in this past season’s NFL Draft, and you have been the weak link of New England’s offensive line, which is solid at best. You have your hands full this week with Nik Bonito. Campbell is the one who must protect Maye’s backside in a game where he could be under duress. Getting sacked five times a game in the playoffs doesn’t suit well for long-term success.

This last key is for the entire team. I know that Jarrett Stidham isn’t the player that Bo Nix is, but don’t take him lightly. How many times over the history of the NFL have we seen teams that are going against a backup quarterback and fall behind early? Start fast and force Denver into uncomfortable situations. Play with the confidence that got you to this point in the season.

Broncos’ Path to Victory

Here is where it can get really interesting. Is it true that Jarrett Stidham hasn’t thrown an NFL pass in two years? Yes. In the same sentence, does he have a head coach who has had success with backup quarterbacks? Absolutely! If there is any coach that can get the best out of Stidham in a one-game scenario, it’s Sean Payton. I love me some Bo Nix, but it’s not like if Matthew Stafford went down for the Rams.

Denver Broncos defense, you have been deemed the ‘No Fly Zone 2.0.” Show the world why you should be compared to that legendary 2016 defense. You are littered with talent from top to bottom. They had a historic defense with 68 sacks on the season. They ranked 3rd in points allowed per game, 7th in passing yards, 2nd in rushing yards, 1st in offensive touchdowns, 1st in sacks, but 28th in takeaways per game. Dominate this game and send your team to the Super Bowl.

Who Wins?

Despite popular opinion, I think this game will be great. That said, I believe the Denver Broncos’ defense will be too much for Drake Maye and the New England Patriots. I don’t expect that Stidham will play anywhere close to as badly as Justin Herbert in the Wild Card round or CJ Stroud last week. Denver wins a close game 24-20 and advances to Super Bowl 60.

Final Thoughts

There is no tomorrow for these two teams. One team will leave with the glory and excitement of reaching the Super Bowl for the first time in many years, and the other will be filled with heartbreak and the taste of being so close. Who do you see winning this game and representing the AFC in the Championship game?
