Fallout 4 is not a new game. It’s over a decade old at this point. However, with interest in the series at an all-time high lately, thanks to two brilliant seasons of Amazon Prime’s television show adaptation, gamers have been flocking to it and have been since the first season debuted.
It’s the most recent single-player story-driven game in the series, as Fallout 76 is a live-service game that hasn’t been given the best reviews, even if it’s improved since its release date. That leaves 4 as the most prominent one gamers are turning to.
Bethesda knows this, and they’re leaning into it. They had a next-gen update for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 when Season 1 concluded. They released the Anniversary Edition before Season 2. Now, they have made four major DLCs free to play.
Fallout 4 Adds Free DLC as Season 2 Wraps Up

Fallout Season 2 on Amazon Prime just had its penultimate episode. It will conclude next Tuesday. Right now is when the interest in the show and the games, by proxy, is at a high. When the season ends, people won’t be as interested in playing a decade-old game.
Fittingly, Bethesda is dropping four DLCs that are now free to play for the game. Even more fittingly, they all seem to connect to New Vegas, which is more or less the direct connection to the current season of the television show.
These downloadable add-ons are community-made, but they’re paid for and commissioned by Bethesda. The developers didn’t make these particular DLCs themselves, but they asked creators to and paid them for it, so they’re fairly official.
They include: The Varmint Rifle by Neeher, The Tale of the Beast Hunter by Hobgoblin Studios, Brotherhood of Steel T60 Pistol by Volodymyr Bondarchuk (Painter2099) and Armando Neto (NetoElite), and Revenge of the Van Graffs by the same people.
The Varmint Rifle has the most notable connection to Fallout: New Vegas. That is literally a weapon from that game, and now you can use it in Fallout 4. Both The Tale of the Beast Hunter and Revenge of the Van Graffs include or allude to factions and gear that’s either directly from or at least inspired by New Vegas.
The T60 pistol is from the show, which is currently all about New Vegas, and the add-on brings it into Fallout 4, so there are connections aplenty. This was likely done for two reasons, one a little more exciting than the other.
First, the show is obviously referencing and even adapting some elements from New Vegas directly, so it’s pretty relevant for that reason. Second, there are rumors of a soon-to-be remastered or remade version of Fallout: New Vegas, which fans have been patiently awaiting for a very long time.
The latter is more exciting, and it’s more likely. Bethesda is drumming up interest before they reveal the remake fans have been asking for for a very long time. Whether that will happen soon or not remains to be seen, but it would probably be in the best interest of everyone to capitalize on all this interest.
The End
Fallout 4 has surged back into relevancy thanks in no small part to the show’s incredible impact. Tons are streaming the show right now, and as a result, they’re also seeking out games to play. Fallout 5 is on the way at some point, though likely not for a while, but 4 and New Vegas are right there, and with a potential remaster on the way, it’s the perfect time for Bethesda to be sneakily dropping pointed DLCs for everyone to play for free.
