The Minnesota Vikings announced today that they have fired general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah after four years with the club. This follows a season where they missed the playoffs and several years of disappointing drafts. Cap whiz Rob Brzezinski, the Vikings’ executive vice president of football operations, will marshal the team through the NFL Draft.
This is the culmination of months of rumors circulating throughout the league that tension was building within the Vikings organization as a once-promising season was torpedoed by injuries and the performance of second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Ironically, Adofo-Mensah was terminated while representing the team at Senior Bowl practices this week in Mobile, Alabama.
Vikings Announcement on Adofo-Mensah
In a statement, Vikings owners Zygi and Mark Wilf said this about Adofo-Mensah’s termination. “Following our annual end-of-season organizational meetings over the last several weeks and after careful consideration, we have decided it is in the best interest of the team to move forward with new leadership of our football operations. These decisions are never easy.
“Building a team that can contend for the championship drives us every day, and we look forward to bringing our fans the success they so deserve. We are grateful for Kwesi’s contributions and commitment to the organization over the past four years and wish him and his family the best in the future.”
Adofo-Mensah’s Tenure with the Vikings
Adofo-Mensah joined the Vikings in January 2022 after serving as the vice president of football operations for the Cleveland Browns. When he was hired, he became only the second general manager during the Wilfs’ 20-year tenure as the team’s owners. He replaced Rick Spielman, who had spent 16 seasons with Minnesota, but was fired after a disastrous season that saw him and coach Mike Zimmer at odds for months.
Adofo-Mensah was hired to overhaul the team’s culture and to bring a more analytical approach to the on-field product. The team posted a 632 winning percentage during his tenure, tied for the fifth-best in the NFL at the time.
But the Vikings were 0-2 in the playoffs during his regime, and that, along with multiple disappointing drafts, sealed his fate. Besides the question marks surrounding McCarthy, high draft choices such as Lewis Cine, Andrew Booth, Mekhi Blackmon, and Ed Ingram failed to become productive long-term players for Minnesota.
What’s Next
As mentioned earlier, Rob Brzezinski will guide the team as they prepare for the NFL Draft in April. The Vikings will search for a new general manager after the draft concludes. Some of the names mentioned as possible replacements for Adofo-Mensah include Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby; Seattle Seahawks’ senior director of player personnel Matt Berry and assistant general manager Nolan Teasley; and Detroit Lions assistant general manager Ray Agnew.
Potential in-house candidates include assistant general managers Ryan Grigson and Demitrius Washington.
